Hi all,

With Buster Neece not seeking re-election as a Secretary in January, I'd like to plea for Secretary nominations and share some of the insights I gained in my first half year as a Secretary. I'm writing this on personal title, and not on behalf of the FIG Secretaries.

One of the primary responsibilities of a Secretary is obviously to administrating and facilitating the FIG processes. I'm very glad to see that some new initiatives have spawned last year. I hope that the new draft PSR's and the introduction of PER's are the precursor to more active standards development. More activity means more work for Secretaries, so ideally Secretary candidates have some time to spare. At the same time I think Secretaries should also look into ways to make their live easier by automation, planning and activating the community.

Another big role of the Secretaries is to market the FIG. This is one of the areas where I am less comfortable with and I hope a new Secretary would help us get our message out to the various media.

Finally, I see that there is a lot of due maintenance. As an example, today I changed the Google Group description, which was probably entered when the FIG left the php.net infrastructure and only mentioned working on coding standards. My personal agenda for 2022 is to initiate some clean-up and maintenance.

All of this does not require an individual to be a Computer Science expert, a PHP guru or a community regular. For me the best candidate is someone that is a good communicator, is not afraid to reach out to individuals or ask questions and can work in a team with Alessandro and myself to make sure all Secretary duties are fulfilled to a high standard.

I invite anybody who thinks this role fits to step forward and make there interest known. Getting a nomination is not as high a hurdle as it may sound. I will nominate any serious candidate that reaches out on list, on Discord or to me personally.

Kind regards,
Vincent de Lau
