Frederic just asked this question, and I thought it may be useful to post here:

You will be able to take measurements and see some results when it's offline, but those measurements will not be saved to the online database.  In order to do so, we need to 'cache' offline measurements on your phone, and then when it's connected ship all the measurements to the web.  The amount of data transferred is pretty small, so there's no need for a particularly fast connection - but some kind of connection is necessary.  We probably won't have caching in place when we start the beta, but it's high priority so I hpoe to have it within a few months of the start of the beta.

Hope that helps everyone -

Greg

It's great to hear that some beta units will be available soon. I am curious about whether this Google Group will be a primary means of communicating with beta testers. If so, I was wondering if some of the information here needs to be updated. For example this answer about whether using the device without an internet connection will allow the data collected to be included in the online database. Does the current phone app allow caching for later uploading? Does the PC Chrome app allow caching for later uploading?
Thanks,
Chris

Short and simple... both support caching at this point :-)

Hey Chris - we founded this google group this early on but I think we're going to have forums at photosynq.org for discussions.

http://photosynq.org/forums/

We have not yet implemented subscribing by email to forums, so it's not quite there yet, but soon we'll have that.  Then you can just subscribe to the "farmers and ag extension" forum and it'll work just like a google group.  I'll try to make sure we have daily / weekly digests also.
