I've been looking for fellow photocrati theme users and stubbled upon
this group. Looked through the discussions and didn't see anything
like this. Just want to see what others have been able to do with
these themes as a base and how far you've taken them.

My site is http://www.pdxfamilyportraits.com

Please let me know what you think and share your page.

Thanks,

Aaron

When my browser tries to load the gallery on your home page I see a spinning circle that looks like when someone tries to view the latest Photocrati when  the page has a gallery and the user is using a browser with ad blocking. In Photocrati's last update they changed something that broke their galleries if you're using an ad blocker, which many people run today. After a while I see what's in the screenshot below.

Another neat effect instead of the Photocrati gallery which is size limited is to use Better Backgrounds and use a self sizing slideshow that sizes itself to fill the users's screen.

I guess everyone's seen the new WP "Carousel" gallery display. It's a really nice full screen self sizing gallery which now is only available on WP hosted sites but they're going to be rolling it out in JetPack for self hosted sites.

My site is http://gregihnen.me but I'm in the process of transitioning away from Photocrati. I'm experimenting on another domain and when I get it right I'm switching my production site. It's really a pain that Photocrati doesn't use standard WP media management and galleries. Because they don't when I switch over I'm going to lose my galleries till I rebuild them.

The ad blocker issue only pertains to Safari and Chrome.  I have reported the issue to Photocrati support, but I don't feel that it will get fixed any time soon.from their response, in which they said that It would not be possible for them to account for all of the innumerable browser extensions.  However, if more users report the issue, maybe it will get fixed.

In regard to the error message "image not loaded in 30 seconds...", I had the same issue until I changed the Image Resolution option to "Re-sized Images (faster)".  This option does not change the dimension of your images, but it compresses the files so they load faster.  The compression degrades the image quality somewhat, but it is not very noticeable in most cases.

If not fixed, these issues will turn away your visitors.  Nobody wants to see a blank screen or images overlaid with error messages.  So I would suggest that you report these issues to Support.

Isn't it funny that they'd take that stance. I run these ad blockers on all my browsers and I'm very active on the internet, I get around, and I don't have any problem anywhere except with their theme.

Greg, I hear what you are saying.  I have been looking at other themes, but haven't found anything with a simple design that puts the focus on the images being displayed.  Photocrati is great at that, but has bugs that turn people off.

Thanks for the heads up. I've tried to replicate this issue in
Firfox, Chrome, and Safari with no luck. I'll keep working on it and
thanks for posting your site. I'll check it out.

As soon as I installed 4.2 my galleries stopped working. I tried with plugins off and it still was broken. All I got was the spinning wheel. I reverted to 4.1 and all was good again.

Thanks for creating this topic. I am new to WordPress and have been
searching for the best way to bring some of my photos "out of the
shoebox" and put them online. I thought I had found the best solution
when I found Photocrati, but searching the web for additional
information has not been encouraging. The pointers here to Photocrati
web sites created by actual users has been very helpful as I try to
evaluate Photocrati.

One thing that would also be beneficial for people like me would be
additional information on your Photocrati web sites. Are you self-
hosting or using a commercial service to host your site? Are you
using NextGen Gallery, Photocrati Gallery or a combination of the
two? Are you using additional plugins to enhance Photocrati?

I am also new to Google Groups. An earlier post I attempted appears
not to have been successful. If this becomes a duplicate, I
appologize.

The group is moderated to avoid spam.  I'm currently traveling in Colombia, so approvals will be a little slow for the next few weeks.  My apologies.

"You may be certain that the world is heading for destruction, but it's a good thing, a moral thing, to behave as though there's still hope. Hope is as contagious as despair: your hope, or show of hope, is a gift you can give to your neighbour, and may even help to prevent or delay the destruction of his world," — Primo Levi, 1985

Fred,

I'm using self hosted WP with Photocrati with Photocrati galleries (which I'm not at all happy with), also Better Backgrounds to give me a full screen background slideshow. I can't wait till JetPack gets updated to include the new carousel full screen gallery/slideshow.

Because photos are the focus of my site I too have been looking at themes that make the photos the focus of the site. The themes I've been looking at are (in no particular order) Kingsize, Ecophoto2 (bought it but it doesn't work), Village, Delight, Atlas, Black Label,
Storm and PictureThis. I think I'm going to get Black Label next.

It seems like there's two classes of 'photography" themes, those that are for e-commerce and those that aren't. There's fewer choices in the e-commerce category. If you need e-commerce then you're a captive audience. If you're not trying to sell your photos there's much more choices.

Photocrati can be customized, as can any other WP theme. Some theme makers put more effort into commenting their code and making it understandable for easy modification. Some authors are willing to work with customers more in answering basic questions about modifying the themes. I found Photocrati's support to stop more or less at the GUI. If you're going deeper than that you're on your own.

I think what will help you decide which theme is for you is to make a list of the features that are mandatory.

Personally these are the things I think are important:

Full screen background images, built in or via 3rd party plugin
Full screen galleries/slide shows, built in or via 3rd party plugin (WP's new "carousel is going to do this really well)
Ability to show photo comments in galleries/slide shows
Ability to put full screen galleries/slideshows in blog posts.
Blog home page
Semi-transparent content and sidebar areas so background image can shine through

I would have thought these are universally appreciated qualities but the lack of themes that do most or all of the above tell me most people are looking for something else or maybe are just happy going with the flow and using what's at hand.

I just wish they had integrated fulfillment, so I wouldn't have to print and send photos.

Here's mine - it's been modified quite a bit. Becoming less of a Photocrati fan and will be changing in the future but for now it is usable.
