So I'm evaluating applications that can convert my older tablets  into digital picture frames. I'm going as far as placing these tablets in real picture frames that will be mounted on walls of my home.

So ideally I don't want a tablet running 24/7.  I noticed in another application, it has the ability to start and stop at specific times of the day and can even wake up the tablet from sleep mode (pending there is no screen lock feature enabled).   I have 2 tests going right now and the best I can do with this application is just dim the screen very low.

The only scheduled task i see is start at boot up, which works fine.  I paired this process with an AutoShutdown application (had to root my devices).  But it has come an annoyance to go to the device each day to turn them on.

I'm wondering if this is a feature that could be implemented?
Thanks,
-dave

Hello Dave,

that sounds like a really useful feature. There's an enhancement request opened here, let's follow the progress here: https://github.com/mvysny/photocloud-frame-slideshow/issues/77

Best regards,
Martin

Martin,
Thanks for the follow up (plus I got an email from someone else following this thread).

As for your suggestion Martin of going over to the thread, am I missing something here?  Looks like the thread is from 2018 and hasn't had any updates since then.  I assumed it was a dead thread.   There was a suggestion in this thread to use something called Automate, which included a flow chart to setup a desired result.  I didn't follow this because I ended up using another process that was easier for me to understand and implement

As for my solution, there was person who suggested Tasker, I never heard of this application but noticed it required a fee to install.  So I started to look for alternatives to tasker, which brought me to find an application called MacroDroid.  This app is free to install and use.  The one thing i'm not sure on is if it requires root.  There are 2 options to turn the screen off, (screen off & screen off root).  Both options for me work however my devices are rooted.  So I just stick with the Screen off Root as I'm assuming its a better option. (again i'm not sure why there is a difference, i'm sure people who are familiar with creating apps will know).  On each device, I setup 2 macros, 1 that turns off screen at 11pm at night & 1 that turns on screen at 7am.   As for the PhotoCloud Frame Slideshow app, I just configure it to auto delayed start after bootup (as well as start/stop depending on AC power).  I also had to change my devices timeout screen setting to be 2 minutes, this ensures the PhotoCloud delayed start has enough time to kick in otherwise the screen will go timeout and this application does not wake up screen.

With the above setup, my experience has been this;  Tablet powers up for the 1st time, shortly after 1 minute the Slideshow begins.  When the Screen Off Macro kicks in, the screen goes dark (but the slideshow is still running) When the Screen on Macro kicks in, I see my photos and are already doing their thing !!

So I bought me the PhotoCloud Frame app today, thank you so much Martin!

The MacroDroid app seems to have lots of ways to configure action items, I'm going to look to see if I can make adjustments to my above settings to have the MacroDroid app take notice of changes with power input vs PhotoCloud.  This way the PhotoCloud can just continue to show photos while MacroDroid keeps the screen on during optimal times ( day time & with AC power on)

Cheers!
