Is it possible to add support for HEIF images in PhotoCloud app?? (file extension .HEIC)

This app has wonderful feature that supports cloud stream for pictures, like Google Photos.  However when those photos are captured in HEIC format, this app is unable to display those images.  I understand this is a relatively new image format used by Apple of iOS 11 on iPhone, but it is not proprietary to Apple.  This is a common standard created by Moving Picture Experts Group, and other vendors are also adding support (like Windows 10 etc).

Is the functionality in PhotoCloud app limited by Android platform? (so we have to wait until that support is available)
Or is this more of a decision for individual app developers using Android platform?
Thanks.

Hi,

thank you so much for your kind words :)

Support for .heif images has been added in PhotoCloud 1.13.4, see https://github.com/mvysny/photocloud-frame-slideshow/issues/92 for more details.

Only Android 9 (Pie) and higher support HEIF images natively. I couldn't find any working third-party HEIF decoder library unfortunately, so there's no support in PhotoCloud for heif images on Android 8.x or lower at the moment.

However, I haven't realized that the HEIF images may have either .heif or .heic extension. PhotoCloud will currently only show .heif files. However, I will fix PhotoCloud to also show .heic files (but only on Android P or higher).

What do you think?

Best,
Martin

Actually I tried out the https://github.com/yohhoy/heifreader library which looks promising. Unfortunately it only supports Android Lollipop and higher, and it failed to load an example heif/heic file I created via Krita: https://github.com/yohhoy/heifreader/issues/8

Please let me know which version of Android do you have. If integrating HeifReader would be interesting for you and you have Android Lollipop or higher, I can use some time to test HeifReader out. In such case could you please send me a couple of heif/heic images so that I can test them out with HeifReader?

I am using PhotoCloud on Android 9 Pie.  So once you fix the file extension issue, that should be good for me. Do you have an ETA when that can be released?  Thank you.

I am not sure if other users of PhotoCloud maybe interested in support for HEIF in prior versions of Android.

Let me try to play with the HeifReader one more time. I think I used a very specific use-case (a lossless heif file). Next time I'll try a lossy heif file, and if the HeifReader will be able to handle such image, I can try to add support for that. It should go rather quickly, so hopefully this I would be able to release a new version. I'll let you know.

Thank you for that quick turn-around time on fixing HEIC file extension.  I have now verified that PhotoCloud version 1.13.16 can indeed display HEIC files from Google Photos stream.

Sorry for the delay, I was having issues with Google Photos "sharing" on tablet that uses PhotoCloud, that issue was resolved today and I was able to check this out just now.  Thank you very much.
