photo.circle is hosting a four-day symposium titled Reimagining Museums in Nepal from Feb 1- 4, 2024 at Nepal Art Council with the hope of facilitating an open forum for individuals, groups, and institutions interested and involved in making, running and engaging with museums. To apply, please submit your application via THIS FORM before Friday, Jan 26th, 2024. Invited participants will be notified by Jan 28th, 2024. Participation is free of cost and invited participants are required to attend all 4 days.
The symposium will be a time and space to discuss the role and function of museums in present day Nepali society, what stories and histories they include and exclude, what purpose they are meant to serve and who they are meant to speak to. The symposium will contemplate alternative propositions for museum-making and possibilities of reimagining the function, relevance and futures of museums.
The symposium is held in conjunction with photo.circle's ongoing exhibition The Sovereign Forest by New Delhi-based artist Amar Kanwar in collaboration with Sudhir Pattnaik / Samadrusti and Sherna Dastur. Amar Kanwar and Sudhir Pattnaik will both present at the symposium and speak on how we might see The Sovereign Forest as a way of understanding and remembering, and on the people’s resistance movements in Odisha, respectively.
The symposium will also host a one-day Convention of Collectors on Saturday, Feb 3rd from 11am - 3pm (open to the public) during which we will gather with and meet various individuals and groups building collections. Why do we collect things? What is the psychology of collecting practices and how can we understand them in relation to identity, culture, history and knowledge keeping?
