REAR VIEW MIRROR - A talk by Dilip Simeon.jpeg

Contemporary life is similar to living in an eternal waiting room. This implies the following habits of thought: the disappearing present (endless deferral); bad infinity (eternal growth); and the unhappy consciousness (ideological fantasy).

We loathe the present, seek solace in the past and long for the bright future. The endless accumulation of money and power have become self-justifying ends; and all issues are cast in a mould of eternal conflict. We are asked to believe in Grand Marches of History and ritual flights from reality.

Truth has been replaced by perspective; theory by interpretation; presence by transience; and actuality by possibility. We are left with neither knowledge nor wisdom, but recipes for endless conflict and linguistic chaos. We need to reconsider the place of political philosophy in our lives.
