Please join us as Daniel Klawson, one of our valued members in Photobears, is giving his dissertation talk on integrated photonics for trapped ion quantum technology. We will serve refreshments/drinks from J's Snacks & Tea. If you plan on coming, please RSVP here so we know how much food/drinks to get.

Title:  2D-3D Photonics for Scalable Quantum Computing
Speaker: Daniel Tai Klawson
Advisor: Ming C. Wu

Date: Friday, December 5, 2025
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM PST

This is a hybrid event held in person and virtually over Zoom.
Location (In-person): 380 Soda Hall

Abstract:
Ion trap quantum computing promises exponential speed-up for some problems that are intractable for classical machines; state-of-the-art devices operate with around 100 quantum bits, while useful algorithms will need thousands of qubits (or more). Current methods rely on bulk benchtop optics which limits integration density, so photonic integration has been identified as a promising method to shrink control optics and boost scalability.

In this talk, I introduce a new photonic hardware architecture combining guided-wave and free-space optics. Our device achieves effectively-achromatic beam focusing from 405 nm to 880 nm (and beyond) via a 2D planar waveguide lens and a 3D-printed biconic mirror. We have measured < -35 dB crosstalk at a 5 µm pitch for the 532 nm and 729 nm barium and calcium gate wavelengths, surpassing the state-of-the-art. We integrate our 2D-3D photonics monolithically with a surface electrode trap, fabricated in a high-yield 6-inch wafer scale process, and demonstrate a robust ultra-high vacuum fiber packaging scheme to achieve sub 1E-10 Torr base pressure.

I report on our progress towards stable ion trapping and quantum measurement using the integrated light delivery, marking the first steps toward full quantum control using 2D-3D photonics. This technology lays the groundwork for scalable, manufacturable quantum hardware with broadband on-chip optics, hopefully unlocking the next generation of high-qubit ion-trap processors.

Hi All,

My dissertation talk has been moved down the hall to Soda 306 (HP Auditorium). It will still take place at the same time (12/5 at 10 AM). See you all tomorrow!

Thanks,
Daniel
