Hi,

Could it be possible, legally and technically, to use PhoneGap
application and premium SMS to handle a web/mobile service payments?

1. The user gets iPhone application link on the web site

2. The user downloads a free application

3. Every time the user uses the application a premium priced SMS is
sent on the background (with the consent of the user).

4. The web service registers incoming premium SMS

5. The web service allows the user to perform premium action (download/
database query/whatever) based on the PhoneGap user agent cookie/
persistent id and information bits in SMS

Do you know what other payment options there are for AppStore apps?

We might implement the SMS sending part if this looks viable scheme.

AFAIK you can only set the number for an SMS, not they body. So you
could send the user to the SMS editor, but he will have to fill in the
keyword himself (which is annoying). Unless you have your own
shortcode, but those can be expensive.
Also, most premium SMS services only work for one, or a few,
countries.
Good luck tho, and if you do manage to populate the body of the SMS,
let me know!
