A friend and I where discussing how to create an iphone app with
phonegap, html, css, javascript... Problem is we heard that apple
won't allow a web app to be a commercial app. You'd have to collect a
subscription fee outside of apple. Is it possible to Shell a web app
so apple approves it for a commercial listing? If so what are some
resources on how to shell a web app (we aren't objective-C coders so a
begginers guide)?

@Ponder - If I'm reading you correctly... you want to wrapper a web
app and submit it to the App Store for distribution. If that's not
correct... no need to read further. Just clarify if you feel it's
necessary.

I'm in the position of having made a web app ready as of last night.
Intent was always to prototype it as a web app and dev it as native.
But, PhoneGap makes this so much easier + getting us a couple other
platforms in the process. I've locked version 1.0 down and am
wrappering today. PhoneGap.com has several commercially available
wrappered/shelled apps to their credit on the App Store (
http://phonegap.com/projects ). What you may have heard about is
Apple's problem with 3rd party APIs which currently does not apply to
PhoneGap.

As for your App Store ambitions:
In order to submit to the App Store you have to be a paid and in good
standing iPhone Developer ($99 and a little bit of time being
approved). It was really a pretty easy and straightforward process.

Finally, once your app is submitted (or submitted on your behalf by a
broker perhaps) it's time to market like mad. Don't just rely on
mothership App Store to get it done for you. The hard work is really
only just beginning.

Most of all... enjoy the ride. Particularly if you have a winner on
your hands.

Hi Gerald,
Just the information I was looking for!
To make double sure - your saying that PhoneGap already includes all
the wrap/shell code necessary for a commercial submission? No outside
code required to wrap/shell the app. That's huge!
All the best!

I recommend you read my blog post ( here: http://bit.ly/3Fwc8L ) for a deeper understanding of how phonegap works.
Also, for the Apple app store, if you plan on simply wrapping a website, you need a compelling reason to not simply leave it as a mobile safari enabled website.  Apple appears to not like apps that make it obvious that they can change their behavior after having been reviewed, ie all functionality is derived from the server, although the water here is murky.

We have 2 apps just like you mentioned already approved on the App
Store. Search for "develatec" on the app store.
