If you downloaded the sample video folder from the childes.psy.cmu.edu server instead of the phon.ling.mun.ca server,
it appears that the version on the CHILDES server was out of date. I have now fixed that. If you downloaded from the MUN server,
then something else must be going on. By the way, I tried using VLC 1.1.10 and it worked fine for me, but I am on OS X 10.6.7.
I see that Yvan suggests trying an earlier version of VLC and maybe that could work for you, but make sure you aren't using the bad version of the demo file.

The issue was traced back to an incorrect configuration in 1.1.10 builds available for the first 24 hours after publication. Please delete your current installation and download VLC again from videolan.org. This will also free 30 MB on your harddrive.
Some technical details:
* Phon requires Java 1.6 which is only available in 64-bit intel
flavors on mac os
* Since Java 1.6 is running in 64-bit, a 64-bit version of VLC is
*required*
* Later versions of VLC have 64-bit support disabled for mac os 10.5.
* The 1.1.10 version of VLC has a library which contains a load
command not available in mac os 10.5. This causes a problem when trying
to load VLC 1.1.10 on mac os 10.5 systems. This load command is not
present in the 1.1.9 and earlier version of VLC. It is likely this will
be the case for future versions of VLC as well.
I've tested the following setup successfully in our lab:
* Mac OS X 10.5.8
* VLC 1.1.9 (32/64 bit universal)
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/1.1.9/macosx/vlc-1.1.9.dmg
* Phon 1.5.0 patch 2. The link to the universal build of VLC 1.1.9 is:
First, drop your current VLC.app in the Trash. Then download VLC 1.1.9
from the link above and copy the VLC.app in the mounted disk image to
your Applications directory. You can reset your preferences if you wish
using the tool in the 'Goodies' folder of the mounted disk image.
After that Phon should be able to find and load the required files.

-Greg
