September News & Events As we head into the fall, and welcome more pleasant weather as well as bountiful harvests, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with POP and partners. Please note that for safety reasons, volunteer group sizes remain small and events may fill up. If you sign up to volunteer but are unable to attend, please cancel your registration to make the space available for someone else! One of our favorite fall traditions is coming back this month: East Park Apple Fest. Join POP and partners at Woodford Mansion on Saturday September 18, from 10am-1pm, for safe outdoor activities including fresh apple cider pressing, heirloom apple tasting, mini pumpkin painting, and more! POP's Fall 2021 Orchard Celebration
Online Program: Thursday September 23, 7-8pm This year's online program will include: a welcome and overview of the organization; a tour of the POP Learning Orchard at the Woodlands; and updates from community orchard partners across the city.The program also includes a recorded presentation of this year's recipients of the Golden Persimmon (recognizing this year's Lead Orchard Volunteers) and Purple Fig awards (recognizing Meei Ling Ng from the Union Baptist Church Garden of Eden). Open House: Saturday September 25, 12-3pm Join us for an open house at the POP Learning Orchard at The Woodlands with POP's staff, board, and volunteers. Press fresh apple cider, sample seasonal fruit from POP orchards, and enjoy music in the pine grove by Martronimous and Keir Nueringer. Sliding-scale tickets are available now, including limited-availability signed prints by honoree Meei Ling Ng (see the artwork at left). Rain date Sunday 9/26.

Check out a recent post on Instagram from a POPHarvest gleaning event in East Parkside. POPHarvest highlights abundant and lesser known foods in our landscape. Chokeberry (or aronia) was traditionally used as a cold and injury remedy, for dye and paint, and dried & incorporated into pemmican by indigenous people, among other uses. At the end of June, just when the currants and gooseberries were setting heavy on the bushes, the POP team made a trip out to Elmer, NJ to visit POP Board member Nate Kleinman at the Experimental Farm Network, which he co-founded.
