Hello everyone,

I have exciting news that I'd to share with all of you.

At Desert Code Camp, this past weekend, remi Taylor, Byron Bowerman,
Curtis Miller, and myself started brainstorming the idea of putting on
a local Ruby conference.

What started as short conversation quickly bloomed into, I believe, an
hour long discussion on logistics and planning.

In summary, we know that hosting a conference is no small task, so
we'd like to invite everyone who is interested in helping to plan
Phoenix's first Ruby Conference.

What: Discuss and plan Phoenix's first Ruby Conference
When: December 6th, 2009 from 2pm to 4pm.
Where: Xtreme Bean, Tempe, AZ [1]

The date is deliberately over a month away and strategically
sandwiched between various holidays to accommodate as many people as
possible.

We hope to see you there.

hey, sounds great. And there should be no shame in copying what has
worked well at other regional events (Mountain West Ruby, Lone Star
Ruby, Ruby Hoedown ..... - I think a number of folks here have been to
some of those. I thought the Hoedown was interesting in that they got
enough sponsorship to make it free! In this economy, it would do well
to keep fees to a small amount. Might help to get a wiki started asap.

Here's the link to that talk on organizing a regional conference that
I mentioned...

(This is from the Scotland on Rails guys; I'm betting an Arizona
conference would have comparable size and issues.)

A ruby conference at eXtreme Bean!?! That's the coolest thing I ever heard. I would totally goto that if I was in town!

Ha ha.. If we held it there, you'd be obligated to return from
Australia to attend.

But, seriously, I hope I didn't mislead anyone with my phrasing. The
planning event will be at XB, not the actual conf.

I have a prior arrangement that conflicts. I voiced my concerns to Marc though. Other than the frufru talks, I'm pretty easy to please (:

@MilesTogoe - great point. I'm in contact with some of the other
regional ruby conference organizers to get their feedback, tips, etc.
I'd also love to see it be a free event :)

========

And while we're all eagerly anticipating the Xtreme Bean planning
meeting, start thinking about the following:

* when would be a good time to have it? Be conscious of other ruby
happenings. There are a lot more than this, but it's a good place to
start: http://rubyonrailsworkshops.com
* how many attendees? 100, 250, 500, 1,000,000?? The recent Aloha on
Rails estimated 130 attendees for a first time conference.
* where should it be held? What are the key attributes of the facility
(e.g., adequate wifi/power, seating type [tables, stadium, etc.],
parking, close to food/drink locations, public transportation, close
to accommodations, ...)? I know this raises a whole host of other
questions.
* who do you know that you can contact to speak, sponsor or otherwise
support the conference?
* anything else you'd like to think about, conference-related or
not :)

Looking forward to helping get this off the ground!

Still, would like to volunteer and participate in whatever way needed¬

On 2nd look, I can be late to the other engagement and plan on making
the trek to Tempe…

Hi everyone,

The last time we met at the coffee shop, we had a larger than expected
turnout, so for the next event, I've picked a location that might
scale a bit better to our needs.

Our next conference planning meeting:

When: Sunday, January 24th
Time: 2 p.m.
Where: Gangplank in Chandler
(http://maps.google.com/maps?q=325+East+Elliot+Road,+Chandler,+AZ)

The event is open to everyone in local Ruby community.
