More Ruby NoSQL - Redis

Redis and the nice Ruby libs for it seem really interesting - but the issue that it works within memory seems really limiting for dealing with large databases - has anyone worked with it ?  Does it require the entire data file to be imported or does it just moved sharded data in and out of memory

I know that it will async write to disk on your prescribed
schedule...so there is some control.
