to The Phoenix Astronomical Society (New Zealand) - Announcements
Peter Read – The People’s Astronomer.
(A new exhibition at Carter Observatory)
Peter Read was a familiar face to many of us around New Zealand. He
brought us “Night Sky”, a monthly television show back in the 60’s and
70’s that brought the skies above us into our own living rooms, along
with those early manned spaceflight missions. He was a Wellingtonian
who was inspirational in the development of our first planetarium in
the city. Peter has left a valuable legacy.
He had many other facets of his life, both public and private, that we
take a glimpse into in this new exhibition.
Carter Observatory celebrates the opening of this exhibition next
Wednesday (20 October) from 6:30 pm onwards with a public event.
Peter’s son Adam Read will say a few words as well.
You are also invited to come along and hear a talk about a subject
close to Peter’s heart – The Next Steps in the Exploration of Mars – a
talk by Dave Maclennan.
Dave will be describing several new Mars missions coming up in the
next few years, including NASA's new rover Curiosity and MAVEN
orbiter, and the joint NASA / ESA sample return mission.
Dave is the President of the NZ Space Assn. and was the first Director
of the Golden Bay Planetarium here in
Wellington.
This will be followed by refreshments to celebrate the opening of
Peter Read – The People’s Astronomer
Exhibition.
