Further to our commitment towards the process of producing a fact based 2014 Nigerian NGO Shadow report, we are pleased to invite you to participate in the development of the ZERO Draft on Monday and Tuesday April 28 and 29 2014 in Abuja.

Special emphasis will be placed on CEDAW thematic areas especially those in  paragraphs 12, 14, 16 and 34 of  the 2008 Concluding Observations. Details are on our website at www.codnigeria.org

Also important are the following EMERGING CONCERNS:

  1. Updated information on reforms of Nigeria’s Penal Code especially session 55 that accepts a Husband has a right to chastise his wife provided no bodily injury/harm is caused considered by CEDAW committee to be a discriminatory law and practice…
  2. Updated Information on discriminatory sessions of Nigerian Labour law 198
  3. Updated information on Women’s Political Participation and capacity building for women politicians.
  4. Child Rights Act – How many more states have adopted this act and the impact it has made on school enrolment: It is important we have data on school enrollment, school completion at all levels - primary to University. Examples and best practice like the case of a 13 year old that killed her husband by poisoning his food due to forced marriage.
  5.  Update on the harmonization of various marriage and family laws in Nigeria by Nigerian Judicial Commission (NJC)
  6. Gender based violence, Trafficking in Persons  and female genital mutilation
  7. Reproductive Health including pre and post natal care/ maternal mortality: Availability and affordability of sexual and reproductive services including family planning, access to comprehensive and qualitative health care services in your community, impact of abortion law on maternal mortality and reform or modification that you know is currently going on across Nigeria. Reports must be fact/ evidence based.
  8. HIV/ Aids
  9. Rural Women and Internally displaced persons
  10. Actualization of  Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)/ involvement of rural  women participation
  11. Updated information on National Gender Policy and its implementation framework.

Of particular interest to CEDAW committee is Nigeria's fixed date for full implementation of CEDAW including adopting measures with concrete timetable to achieve gender equality.

Ensure that rural women have access to electricity, health care, education etc as well as a call for National Legislation against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
