lock your doors and buy a club, and get the shittiest car you can find
being here 23 years i thought i'd never say this, but honestly i feel
right now that i never want to live in the city again, and I'm going to
try to get out of my lease and move out ASAP

That sucks.

$4000 worth of stereo equipment, and you parked at night at 45th and
Spruce? Yikes! What possessed you??

Are you saying this break-in came as a *surprise* to you, after 23 years
here? I'm shocked! Heck, when my parents brought me home from the hospital
(I was born at HUP 30 years ago) to their residence in the Mayer resdience
hall, my dad pulled up and left the car on Spruce near 38th in order to
help my mom get me upstairs. When he came back down, someone had stolen
the seats out of their decrepit old orange VW bug. In West Philadelphia,
car break ins were common 30 years ago, and they're common today. During
my time as a veterinary student (1996-2000), almost all of the people in
my class who drove to school and parked on the street had their cars
broken into at least once! More than one classmate actually had a car
stolen from the neighborhood. So while it really does suck that your car
got broken into and that you got robbed (I've been there - my car was
broken into twice in one month in Berkeley, CA), I don't see why you seem
so surprised.

Didn't the car alarm work, or not do any good?

What's wrong with 45th & Spruce? Isn't that Univ of Penna neighborhood
with lots of college kids?
P.S. The suburbs aren't much better for car break-ins--happens out
there a lot too.
You're lucky. Don't get me started about car breakins! My car has been
broken in or vandalized at least ten times in Philadelphia between 1990
and 1998. Once, during the middle of a beautiful spring day, someone
broke into my car through one of the back seat windows and litterly took
a shit, then rubbed it into carpet on the floor of my car. Nothing was
removed from the car, not even the small amount of change I keep for
when I need to parking meters. Ewww! This was in a dingy car that was
nearly ten years old and was bottom of the line when I bought it new.
When this happened, it was also easily within fifty feet of a manned
security
booth that guarded the parking lot near where I was parked, but when I
questioned the guard there, he knew nothing. I sure did not have any fun
washing out my car that evening and to top it off, I had to drive down to
the shore to meet up with some friends for the weekend with my car
smelling like an out house.
The same car was broken into at least twice even though the only thing
I had visible was some trash on the back seat. The car I had before
that was broken into and I lost three or four pre-recorded casette tapes,
a cheap $50 in dash cassette player, and maybe about $3.00 in change.
This was a ten year old1981 four door Chevy Malibu; hardly a fancy car
which was parked on 11th Street near Pine at the time it was breached.
Two years earlier, on another nice spring day, a bunch of idiots literally
threw up all over this car sometime between noon and 4:30pm, while it was
also parked right near a security booth. There was so much throw up on
the car that I literally had to go get a towel to wipe off the side of the
car
so I could put the key in the door lock to open it. The entire roof was
covered with the stuff and so was a good deal of the windshield. I kid
you not. This really happened. Obviously, I made quick tracks for the
nearest car wash!
This is why I refuse to own an expensive car while living in or near any
major city. There are some people who have no respect for the property
of others and who live like animals ... and unfortunately, they tend to be
found in urban areas. Now, when I park my car anywhere near Center
City, I park it in a secure garage and I leave nothing of value in it.
One New Year's Day, I was helping a friend move to a different apartment.
The weather was unusually warm that day so I took my coat off and tossed
it on my back seat and promptly forgot that it was there. I stopped by my
office on the way home from helping this friend. I was only in my office
for an hour, yet when I returned to my car at around 7:30 that evening, my
car was broken in and my jacket was gone. I called the police to report
the crime and the cops who responded told me not to feel bad, that their
cars had both been broken into too right outside their police station. Geez!

This can happen anywhere now unfortunately. Where did it happen to me?
In my mother's driveway in Haverford, PA. Luckily nothing was taken
so I just had to have the window repaired. But still it was the shock
of *where* it happened that stunned me and still stuns me. I mean
my car wasn't parked on the street. It was parked in driveway which
means whoever had to come on my mother's property to do it. And it
happened quickly. I was parked in that driveway less than an hour.
Believe it or not I am now afraid everytime I happen to park in Haverford.
So far I have never had any incidents happen in Univ. City. and I
have parked on the streets of UC for 25 years.
The thing is if it happens again to you in the 'burbs, as I'm suggesting it
might, do you intend to keep moving? Safety is illusion.

Oh yeah, sorry about that. I really had to go, though.

That was your car too? Oh man, I feel horrible now. What are the odds?

But that's part of what attracts criminals. Lots of, what they
think, are rich Penn students. Easy prey. Easy pickings.

See my post!
I never drive to KofP mall for instance anymore. My car was vandalized there.

Kinda my reaction.
This story is almost too wild too believe. I mean I have been dealing with
things Philly for a LONG TIME and I have never heard of any such thing.

The insurance company is going to cover everything, so I feel alot
better.
Oh well, life goes on, learn a lesson, buy detachable face head units
and bolt everything to the car..

Believe me, I wish I could say the same thing, but this really happened to
me. Its also part of what made me move outside the city a few years ago.

Car alarms typically go off only for insignificant events, like someone
walking past the car after midnight. They tend to remain quiet when
someone actually tries to break in.

Absolutely. Think about it: tons of stupid college kids, mostly from da
boibs, with zero street smarts. In other words: easy marks. Easy marks
attract street crime, rather than repelling it.
I can't begin to tell you how many times I'd look through the crime
report in the Daily Pennsylvanian and note all the reports of car
break-ins where the only things stolen were unsecured CD players sitting
on the front seat, or cell phones sitting out similarly exposed.
> P.S. The suburbs aren't much better for car break-ins--happens out

I know it. When I was a kid, I had my car broken into in the "nice,
safe suburbs, where that kind of thing *never* happens" (the former is a
frequently-heard reason given by people for avoiding cities).
