This tunnel originally carried the old 43 trolley -- no cars were
permitted. After the conversion to buses, it was open to automobiles
with both lanes to be used for westbound travel only. several years
ago it was shut down. when it reopened only one lane was put into use
for safety reasons.
Spring Garden Street on the other side of the circle.
Oh, I remember this tunnel! A certain times of year, its western exit faces
DIRECTLY into the sun in the late afternoon. Literally -- on sunny days at
these times of year, you absolutely cannot see anything in front of you
except blazing sun. You just have to keep going and hope there's nothing in
front of you.
The entrance to this tunnel is at the intersection of Spring Garden Street and
Pennsylvania Ave. It's a way for you to bypass Eakins Oval en route to the
Schuylkill Expressway.

This is a former trolley tunnel. It leads from Spring Garden Street
under Eakins Oval and the Art Museum steps, to the exit just off
Spring Garden. It's been closed on-and-off for the past few years; I've
never seen both sides open, but the other side used to be open.
