Remember when the Troc (at 10th & Arch) was a burlesque house?
Every week they'd run a new ad in the daily papers announcing the
headliner with a terrible pun.
I can remember three of them: "Frances Bacon - You'll love her
strips"; "Cherry Hill - She loves the mall" (them all, get it?); and "Lynn
Oleum - She'll floor you." Does anyone remember any others?

I don't remember the whole ad but "Aretha Holly" performed around Christmas.

Now this brings something I had forgotten about. Every week when I was
a kid I used to love getting the paper and seeing who would be at the Troc.
Ones I remember at the moment:

Dora Knob--one good turn deserves another
Nagi Saki--moves every molecule
Dal Mation--you can spot her a mile away
Chanda Lere
Noma Laska
Ann Tarctic

And so many others that will come to me I'm sure. I have an uncle who
would tell me that he used to sneak in when he was in high school in the
50s, and the same women were stipping there in the 70s. I doubt it, but
it added to the mystery for me.

Those were wonderful ads. My favorite (and the only one
I remember) was "Dora Knob"

an irish tenor and also was an extra for some skis . He also had a radio
program on WDAS as Misha Rose where he sang Jewish cantorials. In fact
his regular daytime gig was as a cantor. I figured that going to the
Troc couldn't be too bad is Cantor Rose sang there.

Great thread.

When I was a grad student ten years ago, someone had posted a long row of
them in the lab.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Since I posted this, I
found the obituary of Maxie Furman, the former manager of the Troc, who
placed the ads. He died in 1985 and the Daily News mentioned a few of
the names he made up:
Penny Central: The Commuter's Delight
Lisa Car: She Gives Till It Hertz
Carlotta Tendant: You'll Want to Park Here All Night
Sue Baroo (an economy import)
and "the immortal Bermuda Schwartz."

If anyone remembers any more, please post them. Someday, I may
go to Paley or the Free Library and check the old ads on microfilm.
