Anyone know of a good place for some ribs in the Philly area?

Ron's Ribs on South Street near 16th
Pheobes near 22nd and South (IMO not quite as good as Ron's but still OK)

Gotta say Phoebe's on South Street somewhere (around 21st or so).
The sauce is right, the meat is right, the price is fine... I
have not tried too many of the side dishes -- just potato salad,
actually, which was also good.

Copa Too on 15th Street just north of Spruce Street has pretty
decent baby back ribs, but it's more of a sit-down thing instead
of a takeout joint like Phoebes. But then there's the Belgian
beers...

The sauce at Ron's is not as good as Phoebe's. It's just hot and
vinegary. Then again, it depends on what you like. I prefer slightly
sweet tomatoey barbeque sauce. The best ribs I've had in Philly came
off the back of a truck converted to a charcoal grill around 65th and
Market, parked on the side of the street. Probably only in the summer
.... In a pinch, RIB-IT on Walnut can satisfy a craving, but they're
not consistent. I've had fine ribs and crummy ribs there on differnet
occasions.

Check out their greens sometime. Delicious.

Anyone else remember that BBQ pit up on 40th St. near Chestnut that was
there in the late 80s? I remember it being pretty damn good, although my
memory could be wrong...

That was Audrey's Pit Bar-B-Que. She said the neighborhood got too bad so
she moved out to the Chestnut Hill Farmers Market. She is no longer in
Chestnut Hill and I'd love to know if she is somewhere else.

You mean Audrey's, of course. My best memory of it was that you could smell
the BBQ a block away! :-)

Yeah, that's the one.

God, I used to love that place. When I first started visiting my sister
at Penn till it closed... I literally could barely walk by 40th & Walnut
without turning North on 40th St. to go get me some good food...

Of course, now Ron's Ribs backs right up next to my house, so I've kind
of gotten used to the constant smell of BBQ in the air.

But that doesn't stop me from constantly craving it. And besides, I like
Phoebe's better.

I'm not sure that Rib-it on Walnut (btwn 17th & 18th) can do anything any
more. They've been closed for a while now.

It was Audrey's Pit Barbeque @around 46th and Chestnut. Back
then, it was the best..now I guess Phoebe's has to take top honors
within regular city limits. Germantown has a few good spots.

As of a month or so ago, the one on Roosevelt Blvd. at Grant Avenue in
the Northeast was still open. But most of the other ones I knew of have
closed.

I like beef ribs occasionally, and in one of the first messages I posted
here almost a year and a half ago I asked where I could get beef ribs.
Most restaurants only serve the pork ribs in one form or another. Even
though I understand that beef ribs are somewhat of a Texas specialty,
the Lone Star chain only has pork ribs.

Rib-It was the only place I knew to get another favorite of mine, lamb
ribs. Years ago, they also had veal ribs.

Places where I have seen beef ribs on the menu, if I haven't actually
ordered them myself:

1. Rib-It
2. A restaurant on Route 73 (Township Line Road, extension of Cottman
Avenue) in Elkins Park, across from what used to be called Rolling Hill
or Hills Hospital. The place is called something like Rib Rack. Very
small with no non-smoking section, and no chicken-beef ribs combo
available for ordering (they do have a chickin-pork ribs combo). But
the ribs are pretty good.
3. Kahunaville, a new restaurant in Oxford Valley Mall.
4. Old Country Buffet (all-you-can eat chain located in various suburban
areas) on Saturday and Thursday nights.
5. I ate at a restaurant on South Street, probably near 5th or 6th
street, on October 22, 1995, that had beef ribs on the menu. It was a
barbecue restaurant, and since I also love mesquite grilled fish, which
this restaurant also had and which I was more in the mood for that
night, I had one of the fish dishes. And liked it a lot. If I'm ever
back in this part of town, I'll be sure to look for it again. I hope
it's still in business.

We had good takeout ribs recently from Dwights Southern Bar-B-Que II,
at 3734 Germantown Ave (at Broad). Beef and pork.
The old yellow pages that I have says that Dwights I is at
4345 Lancaster Ave.

Enjoy!

Red Hot & Blue, in Cherry Hill across from Garden State Park.
They've got pork ribs either in a BBQ sauce or (my fav) a tangy dry
spice. (Sorry, can't compare to the others mentioned in this thread.)

The Rib Crib is the best I've had around here (beats Phoebe's & Ron's) -
the sauce is simply amazing.

Germantown Ave. between Duval & Washington - go in the daytime or while
heavily armed.

there is still a Rib-It on State Street in Media, and
while they don't even approach the heavenly goods I
used to get at Audrey's, for us suburbanites, they
still make some really great baby backs...

There's also a Rib-It next to the cherry Hill Mall. It's pretty close
to Red-Hot-and Blue (which emphasized Memphis-Style Ribs) which are
pretty heavily smoked and very pink (not rare, but pink from the blush
of smoking). They're good, but I always prefer ribs cooked over fire
to just smoked. I'll have to try the Rib-Crib as recommended above.

My favorite ribs in the Philadelphia area now are a bit hard to find.
They are made by a group of men in Ambler in the parking lot at the
American Legion post. They are there on Friday and Saturday afternoons
and serve ribs, turkey wings, and chicken. Inside, they also have
favorites like mac&cheese and greens. They are not out when the
temperature is below freezing or there is rain.

If you are in the Ambler area on the right days definately try out these
ribs. When you are heading north on Bethlehem Pike, cross Butler Ave. and
shortly the Artman retirement center will be on your left. Make an
immediate left on the small street at the far end of Artman building and
proceed down the street, cross the train tracks, and the ribs will be on
your left. There will be a big sign in the parking lot when they are
there.
