If you go to Spinx Control Panel and set autologin, it wants to
replace the already installed gdm-legacy (gtk2) with gdm (gtk3).

If you mark gdm for installation in Synaptic, it wants to remove gdm-
legacy and install the following packages:
gnome-desktop3
gnome-settings-daemon
lib64gnomekbd7
lib64pulseglib20
metacity
I did not install gdm (gtk3). If you simply want an autologin, open
Synaptic. Do all your updates first. Mark autologin for installation.
Check to be sure xdm is installed. (I think it already is.) If not,
install it.
Open Spinx Control Panel. Select Boot in the side panel and Setup
display manager in the right panel. Change the display manager to XDM.
Then setup autologin for your user again. The XDM login screen has no
session, shutdown or any other options. It has a simple login screen
where you must manually enter your username and password.
