I have formatted my .biom file with both the taxonomy and metadata as per the help instructions and I have compared my file to the test data file, so I think my file is formatted correctly. However, phinch tells me there are no samples, although I can see my metadata and the correct number of samples/sequences at the top of the page (see screen shot). Is this a bug or is there something else I am missing for the formatting?

Hi Julie,

Before you embedded your metadata, did you make sure it was a QIIME-style tab-delimited mapping file, with a header line that looks something like this:

#SampleID BarcodeSequence LinkerPrimerSequence CollectionDate Material phinchID Description

You need the #SampleID column for Phinch to pull in the sample names.

If this all looks OK, would you mind sending me your .biom file? I can look through it and get a better idea of what's wrong. My email is holly dot bik at gmail dot com.

It was the format of the CollectionDate. When in doubt, read the directions (again!). I just took out that column since I don't have a full time stamp for the data and it works beautifully now!
