Since you and I are not experts in Solid works I was hoping someone who has done the interchange between the two - who I tagged @napperkt might shed more light and detail out what they suggested and how it works out (in terms of steps) as I tried it and failed.

The people who continued the work in Solidworks had to make the whole design from scratch - only using the imported SketchUp-stl model as a reference. Under the hood these programs like Solidworks are totally different and use a much much higher precision for curved shapes etc (parametrics).
Same situation for me. We have a great time creating models in SketchUp, but the Sheet Metal guys use SolidWorks and have so far rejected both our dxf file and out STL file as inadequate.
I can send them the DGW I suppose, but I wonder why that would work and not dxf/stl.

The advantages to do routing or piping in a parametric 3D environment with SOLIDWORKS are multiples. Among them, being a parametric design modeler is one of the main reasons because we can easily edit the design at any stage in the design process and visualize our design in real time. Also, the integration combining different engineering disciplines into one single compatible design system helps to save time and reduce costs, facilitating the collaboration throughout the design process. And finally, quick, easy-to-use and with a short learning curve, it will be easy to find and train new professionals when necessary.
These advantages are not sufficient for plant design especially when working on piping. The huge amount of engineering data demands to have a data-centric, piping specification driven solution fully integrated with SOLIDWORKS. For this reason I will use for routing SolidPlant 3D, a database driven solution and an add-in on top of SOLIDWORKS standard edition.
Before to start, its important to know that the piping specification assigned to the pipework will define the 3D components considering dimensional and material properties for an intended service. This will give the piping designer the freedom to just focus on the route path.
After this, we just focus on creating the route by manually sketching the path of the pipe line, making simple square corners and adding the dimensions needed. Youll see a preview of a pipe along the line to highlight the route.
The piping components will be generated automatically according to the properties specified in the piping spec. SolidPlant 3D is intelligent, it recognizes the nozzle point connections and adds their corresponding components like flanges, gaskets and bolts.
The piping components will be generated according to the new path. SolidPlant 3D is sensitive of the path that is routed by the user and recognizes that on the point connection between the newly created perpendicular line and the existing one a straight tee is required.
In order to start, we select the tag of the pipe wed like to create and use the functionality Smart Route. The route path is automatically sketched without creating any 3D component; the automatic generation of the piping components is disabled.
A new dialog-box is displayed, SmartRoute Interface. Through this interface you can change the start and end point of the pipe line in the From and To window in which all the available nozzles are listed. By selecting any of the check-boxes, the path will change accordingly to the new connection.
If there are valves assigned to the pipe line, the AddValve window will be displayed listing the available tags for the current pipe. We can select the tag, drag and drop into the pipe section.
