I think the ownCloud project  (http://owncloud.org/) has a bright
future. It is still very young and a lot of things need to be
implemented. This will include basic functions such as data sync
across multiple clients which will require you to understand
algorithms and data structures in detail. This is a cloud computing
project and I think getting involved with this will be very exciting
and fruitful in the long run for you people.
Also check out csync (http://www.csync.org/). Read a description of
how file sync should be done on
http://www.csync.org/userguide/csync.txt .
