Greetings all,
The Philosophers’ Guild plans to host its last event of the semester,
Senior Departure, on Friday April 30, 2010, the same day as the
department’s last Philosophy On Friday event. For those unaware, the
Philosophers’ Guild is an undergraduate philosophy club at GSU.
Senior Departure is a chance for graduating seniors to present a paper
in front of their peers before departing from the GSU philosophy
department. The event will begin at 10am sharp and will feature 4-5
GSU philosophy majors’ paper presentations. We shall allot 20 minutes
(15 minutes to present & 5 for Q&A) for each presentation. This event
is a Philosophers’ Guild meeting, not a contest. So, there will be no
prizes or judges. Senior Departure will end by noon.
Papers presented at this event should conform to the basic
requirements of a term or research paper on a philosophical topic. The
Philosophers’ Guild encourages philosophy majors and minors to submit
an abstract based on one of their term papers or research papers on a
philosophical topic. Abstracts should be submitted as Microsoft Word
documents, double-spaced, in Times New Roman, and in 12 pt font. They
may be up to a page long; please do not submit full-length papers. The
Philosophers’ Guild will select abstracts from submissions based on
the author’s clarity about the limits of the paper's discussion and
evaluation of a philosophical argument or theme in philosophy.
However, the Philosophers Guild grants seniors priority in its
considerations and selections, but since we can only select 4-5 total
abstracts for the event, we will also consider time and date of
submissions. If you cannot attend, please do not submit.
The deadline for abstract submissions is Friday April 16, 2010. Email
all abstract submissions to jbern...@student.gsu.edu with the
subject heading titled “SD Abstract Submission.” Please email them
from your GSU student account. In the body of the email, please
include the following information:
1. Paper or Project title
2. Student Status (Fresh, Soph, Jun or Senior)
3. Whether or not you would like the Guild to print abstracts or
handouts for your presentation.
4. Your primary and secondary research interests in philosophy

Also, the Philosophers’ Guild encourages all philosophy majors and
minors to attend the event. Senior Departure offers participants—both
presenters and attendees—a chance to network with like-minded and like-
interested undergraduates, share research interests, hear other
undergraduates’ work, and to philosophize! If you are considering
submitting but question the quality of your work, please submit
anyway. Consider that this would be an opportunity for you to practice
public speaking and presentation skills and to receive input and
constructive feedback from your peers.

We hope to see you all on April 30 for Senior Departure. If you have
questions or concerns, please email them to
jbern...@student.gsu.edu with the subject heading titled
“SDQuestion.” Location and Food selection: TBA.

All the best,

Jamie Bernhardt
Vice President of The Philosophers’ Guild
