As we head towards the end of the school year we are in need of a few
more resolutions. Please suggest topics here for the business meeting
which will be held this Saturday, March 27th.

Resolved:

The United States government lift its embargo against Cuba.
The U.S. government should implement a nationwide program of school
vouchers.
The U.S. Department of Education should be eliminated.
The District of Columbia should be granted statehood.
The United States should sign a free trade agreement with Colombia.
NAFTA failed.
U.S. government foreign aid is a worthwhile expenditure.
Stephen Colbert, and not Jon Stewart, is the greatest 21st century
American satirist.
Sherman's March was justified.
That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be Free and
Independent States.
The United States are.
The Monroe Doctrine has succeeded.
The 16th Amendment ought to be repealed.
Russia is a European state.

A recurrent issue:
Tolerance trumps truth / Tolerance is a more important societal value
than the preservation of truth

Or, perhaps, something about our beloved school, which has been
boiling over with debate lately:
Georgetown University ought to censor offensive student publications
Georgetown University ought to permit the sale of contraceptives
Georgetown University ought to abolish the core curriculum
Georgetown University can stop pretending it’s Catholic now

And, while it’s idiosyncratic, I still think we could have an actually
interesting debate over:
The automobile has done more harm than good

I like the first resolution, however I'd like to add this to the mix.

Respect not tolerance is better for society.

The United States should institute policies to cap greenhouse gas emissions.

Lucifer is the hero of Paradise Lost.

Humanitarian aid to Africa does more harm than good.

Post-modernism should be expurgated from serious academic disciplines (Sociologists can still talk about it).

The world depicted in 1984 is more terrifying than the world of Brave
New World.

The application of Keynesian economics worsens the economy in the long
run.

Anthropomorphic Global Warming is a myth.

Liberty is more important than happiness.

Alternatively, anthropomorphic cooling is also an option:

Civilization improves man's moral character.

The liberal arts should be the focus of a university education.

Religion no longer provides the best understanding of the world.

Facebook has done more harm than good.

Those are pretty sweet. Maybe debating on whether it's a scam or
propaganda would be a better topic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBzR0-j0O0o

Just going to go ahead and put this one out there, I will refuse to let the Philodemic society debate climate change.

My friends,

In tradition with the Merrick season, we will have a meeting about judges after the business meeting on Saturday, March 27th at 12 noon on the second floor of the ICC. Anyone who has an interest in Merrick judges should stay the entire meeting and join the discussion.

See you all there!
