We're Back From the Youth Bike Summit!
This Memorial Day weekend seven Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) youth and four staff traveled to the Youth Bike Summit in Minneapolis, MN. Our youth led a workshop at the Summit, tried out Minneapolis' Bikeshare (Nice Ride), and had a ton of new experiences. We'll share a full update soon. In the meantime, here are a few photos from our trip. There are more here.

Unstoppable: NBW at the Kinetic Sculpture Derby
The NBW team was prepared for challenges along the annual Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby route, and the challenges came thick on Derby Day.
For one, the forecast called for heavy rain. We brought ponchos and went anyway. The Derby parade route was the longest yet, taking over three hours to complete. We paraded anyway. There were obstacles on the course - slippery, soapy bubbles; unforgiving and unpredictably sloped wooden blocks; and a mud pit where a throng of onlookers would cheer and jeer as we rode through. We pedaled through them all.
The real challenge for the team of NBW youth, staff and volunteers that built and powered NBW’s kinetic sculpture was a wobbly front wheel. Early in the three-hour course the wheel turned from wobbling (out of true) to a very flat tire. In order to stay in the parade, the team pulled over and used its mechanical savvy to replace the tube within the three minute timeframe the course marshals allowed. We did it! We lifted the sculpture, removed the wheel, removed the tire, replaced the tube, and reassembled it all back on our Dragon sculpture in under three minutes.

HBD Youth Bike Share Ambassadors
Indego recently turned one, and with it so did our Youth Bike Share Ambassadors partnership. NBW's role is to engage youth in spreading the word about bike share to hard-to-reach communities within Philadelphia.
This spring, summer and fall, the Youth Bike Share Ambassadors will take to the streets to spread the love about Indego. This year, rather than simply handing out fliers and promoting the new system, our youth will flex their bike mechanics skills. They’ll offer bike safety checks to the public so neighborhood families can get their bikes tuned up.
While our trained teen mechanics tighten brakes and adjust gears, adults in the family have an opportunity to test ride an Indego bike to see what it’s all about.
YBEEP Coordinator Taylor Kuyk-White explains that this multi-layered ambassador program allows youth to identify where their skills and talents are- whether in engaging with people or diving into a complex mechanics challenge. Plus, it puts youth in the role of representing the Philly bike community and breaking down the idea that Indego is just for one group of people – those who live in Center City for instance, or for wealthy people. “It’s exciting to see our youth in a position of doing community outreach and advocacy,” Taylor said.
That’s not all, either. This year, for the first time, we’ll partner with Bicycle Transit Systems (BTS) to place youth mechanics in BTS’ warehouse bike shop where they’ll have a part in tuning up those Indego bikes. For six weeks this summer, those youth will earn money in a unique summer job, paid through Philly’s Work Ready program and the Better Bike Share Partnership.
Last but not least, NBW collaborated with the Better Bike Share Partnership to produce a toolkit to share our skills and experience with youth biking and bike share with other cities looking to do the same.
We see wins all around from this partnership. Not bad for a one-year old.
