Seven Philly Media Makers met on April 29. Here's who came out: Becky, Greg, Colin, Jonny, Ryan, Dan, and Becky's colleague (whose name eludes me. My bad!).

We had a good chat about a couple of topics. Here's the most concrete thing:

We decided that we wanted to do an event showcasing the work of people who make awesome media.

It can be any medium, but for now we know we have people interested in talking
about the following topics:
  • the intersection of music and artificial intelligence
  •  motion graphics
  • a publication about Philly lowbrow art
  • animation for fun and profit

People expressed an interest in presenters who in addition to showing a piece of work, would put the work in context by explaining their production process or why their
work matters.

For example in the case of the publication on lowbrow art, Ryan could explain what a rich scene Philly has and how unrepresented that scene is in current
media. In the case of Dan maybe he could show us something that showcase the latest awesome motion graphics technique. Or maybe he could explain what is involved in making
a particular motion graphic.

Goal: Cross fertilization of ideas and inspiration. Some people may want to find collaborators, spread an idea, or teach a technique.

When: 6-8 weeks from now.

Where: Jonny is going to inquire with Alex about whether we might be able to do the event at Indy Classic (32 Strawberry). If not there Becky said that a space called Fishtown Airways
may be interested in a hosting an event.

What will the event be called? Hmmmm....Suggestions? Philly Transmedia Meltdown? Philly Media MooshUp?  Hit us with your ideas!

Who: Let us know if you want to present something or know someone who would be awesome. So far, I think five people from the meetup are up for presenting stuff. If we alot
10 minutes per person (including transitions from person to person), then we should have room for at least 5 more. And it's fine to go less for 10 minutes. In fact it's great.

So please let the list know if you are interested in presenting something. And if you were at the meeting and I left stuff out, please chime in.

I left some stuff out at the end of the notes. Here it is:

----Media making spaces tend to be very customized to particular sets
of needs. Thus the idea of a mulitpurpose dedicated media making space
at Indy Hall is not necessarily
feasible, since everyone has specific, and often different, needs. A
more likely scenario is that if people know where their specific need
can be met (say recording a voice over) then they can connect to a
space that is set up for that.

Philly Media Makers can be a resource for sharing information about
media making spaces and what niches they fill.

----Becky reported about the fieldtrip to Rodney's place. Sounded fun
AND educational.

Jonny, thanks for the notes.  I think that the meeting went great.  It feels damn good to have a direction and a goal that everyone is on the same level with.  Not to imply that this is the end goal or the last incarnation (instant breakfast) of the group, but this feels like a more concrete shape of things to come.  Thanks again everyone.  I can't wait for our big day.  It's like a great, arty, nerdy prom (without dancing).

Gosh, I hope someone else isn't wearing the same dress as I am.

Great recap, Jonny!

I just invited a hugely-talented author/playwright/professor and long-
time-friend to the PMM list. Her name is Debra Leigh Scott
(debrale...@me.com):

Web: http://www.debraleighscott.com/
HIdden River: http://www.hiddenriverarts.com/
Twitter: http://twitter.com/DebraLeighScott
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=logo#/profile.php?id=1038139320&ref=ts

I'll let her make her own introduction, but she's interested in
presenting her work at our upcoming "show-and-tell", and I think a
professional writer would be a valuable addition. She's working on
the arts revitalization project on South Street and has suggested a
possible venue for the event if IndyHall classic doesn't work out.

More to come,
Greg

That's great news Greg, welcome to the club Debra.
What's the venue?

Right! I don't know much and I've yet to visit so I'll let her fill
in the details. It's 117-119 South Street, and there's a BBQ (BYOB)
"open house" party going on THIS AFTERNOON from 2p-8p. Everyone is
invited to stop by.
