About AAU:
Asian Americans United was founded in 1985 by a small group of volunteers seeking to create an organized response to rising issues of anti-Asian violence, substandard housing, and the need for equitable educational services for a growing Asian community. Today, AAU exists so that people of Asian ancestry in Philadelphia exercise leadership to build their communities and unite to ensure justice and equity for all.
For more than 35 years, AAU has worked in Philadelphia’s Asian American communities and in broader multiracial coalitions to ensure quality public education for all students, develop youth leadership, combat anti-Asian violence, advocate for immigrant rights, and support folk arts and reclaim cultural heritage.
Currently, AAU takes a multifaceted approach to community-building with programming primarily focused in three areas:
- YOUTH LEADERSHIP: AAU maintains a consistent focus on working with young people — to harness their bilingual and bicultural skills, and to engage their critical thinking in the service of their communities. AAU currently runs 3 after-school programs and 2 summer youth leadership programs.
- ADVOCACY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: AAU advocacy focus areas include language access, neighborhood development, immigrant rights, and our Chinatown Vote civic engagement program. AAU works in broad coalitions to grow progressive API leadership in the electoral landscape in Philadelphia and across the state.
- RECLAIMING CULTURE: AAU’s arts and culture work builds pride in cultural heritage through our Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival. AAU also supports folk arts programming at the Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS) as well as through the Inch By Inch community garden.
AAU is headquartered at the FACTS Charter School at 1023 Callowhill Street in Chinatown North.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Youth Program Work:
- Overseeing all AAU youth program work
- AAU Youth Intern Program
- CYOP School Year Program
- CYOP and Summer Program
- Coordinate and develop youth programs
- Program planning and curriculum design
- Recruitment, outreach, retention of youth participants for school year and summer programs
- Building community spaces for Asian American and Asian immigrant youth
- One-on-one check-ins with youth program participants
- Incorporating curriculum with surrounding community and city-wide campaigns and efforts
- Supervision and support of youth program staff and interns
- Program administration including record keeping, program evaluation, report writing
- Fundraising and grant support
- Public education advocacy and coalition building/participation with other organizations
AAU Organizational Support:
- Support Mid-Autumn Festival planning and organizing
- Attend Mid-Autumn Festival Meetings (except during summer program high-time)
- Support youth leaders to connect to Mid-Autumn Festival
- Campaigns for Justice
- Representing AAU in various coalition work
- Supporting youth leaders to participate and connect with campaign goals
- Represent organization in public spaces and at actions
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong interest in and familiarity with social justice issues;
- Desire to empower the Asian American community and work with other low-income communities and communities of color;
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills;
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, requiring minimal supervision;
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Mandarin Chinese Language skills: confidence and fluency in speaking,
- Experience in working with youth
- Experience in train-the-trainer settings
- Strong writing skills to support grant and reporting requirements
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record
- Ability to make a two year commitment to this position
COMPENSATION: Salary commensurate with experience starting at $41,600. Full benefits including health care (health, dental, vision), 7 paid holidays, winter break, and 15 paid-time off days each year.
