Community Organizing Coordinator

Full-time

 Organization:

 

The Philadelphia Bail Fund (PBF) is a non-profit, revolving bail fund that pays bail for Philadelphians who are awaiting trial and are unable to pay for their freedom. Since 2017, the PBF has helped free over 500 Philadelphians from pre-trial detention. PBF is committed to reducing the harms of pre-trial detention by posting bail and advocating – in partnership with allies and impacted communities - for the end of cash bail and other forms of pre-trial detention in the long-term.

 

Job Summary:

 

PBF is seeking an innovative and effective Community Organizing Coordinator to assist in coordinating our grassroots campaign to end cash bail in Philadelphia. The Community Organizing Coordinator will be responsible for mapping out and executing a comprehensive strategic campaign plan. They will be responsible for doing this in collaboration with staff, member leaders, and coalition members. The ideal candidate is an experienced community organizer and campaigner who is also a coalition-builder and strategist. They must believe in centering the lived experiences of justice-involved people in organizing, while building community leadership, capacity, and power.

 

Responsibilities:

 

·         Assist in planning and developing PBF’s multi-year strategy, as well as the organization’s campaign to end cash bail and pre-trial detention in Philadelphia;

·         Coordinate execution of an organizing plan and public education/ narrative shifting campaign;

·         Conduct base building among people impacted by bail in Philadelphia so they can more effectively participate in planning and policymaking on issues which affect their lives;

·         Convene and attend regular community meetings, coalition meetings, and other stakeholder meetings;

·         Engage in a wide variety of tactical organizing activities, including direct-actions, teach-ins, and others in collaboration with PBF team and local partners;

·         Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, coalitions, advocacy groups, and other local grassroot community-based organizations;

·         Work with PBF’s communications team on developing materials for community partners, including fact sheets, presentations, and information packets;

·         Record and input data into a volunteer and community engagement database;

·         Additional duties as assigned by Executive Director

 

Qualifications:

 

You are driven, highly organized, and have a deep commitment to Philadelphia Bail Fund’s mission to end pretrial punishment in Philadelphia. We are looking for someone who has experience running and/or working on strategic organizing campaigns, and who has skills in coordinating and facilitating decision making for large, diverse coalitions engaged in systemic change via broad grassroots power building. An ability to adapt to the changes inherent in a rapidly scaling startup is essential. Priority will be given to candidates who have been directly impacted by bail and/or the criminal legal system.

 

To excel in this role, you likely bring the following:

 

·         Minimum of three years of experience in organizing communities or coalitions to advance systemic change, including but not limited to the criminal legal system;

·         Experience with facilitating meetings and trainings, and/or coordinating coalitions;

·         Familiarity with the criminal legal system (through education, criminal justice work, and/or personal experience with the system);

·         Commitment to dismantling mass incarceration and carceral systems;

·         Dedication to centering the experiences and beliefs of justice-involved people in program design and development;

·         Deep commitment to countering all forms of bigotry in both the criminal legal system and PBF’s work, including racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia;

·         A demonstrated ability to plan, implement and coordinate successful community outreach and public education campaigns;

·         A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with coalitions of organizations, community members/leaders, and public officials both electronically and in-person;

·         Experience organizing in Philadelphia, and knowledge of key political leaders, is strongly preferred;

·         Excellent public speaking skills and writing ability; 

 

Compensation & Benefits

 

The annual salary is $55,000 and includes 100% employer paid health benefits and expansive paid time off.
