SE PA Coordinator/Fellow Job Description

Pennsylvania Interfaith Power and Light (PA IPL) is a community of congregations, faith-based organizations, and individuals of faith responding to climate change as an ethical and moral issue, through advocacy, education, energy conservation, energy efficiency, stewardship, and the use and promotion of clean, renewable energy.

PA IPL recently received two grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). A three-year grant in the DEP Growing Greener Plus program, and a one-year grant in the DEP Environmental Education Grant program. The one-year Env Edu grant has the potential to expand to three-years based on DEP review of our performance in Year 1.

PA IPL is seeking a part-time, contract-based SE PA Coordinator/Fellow for work in the Philadelphia area to assist in designing and delivering environmental education programs related to both grants. This person should be passionate about Climate Justice and the interfaith mission of PA IPL for work in specific Environmental Justice Communities in SE PA. 

The SE PA Coordinator/Fellow will work under the direct supervision of the PA IPL Development Associate, the PA IPL / DEP Coordinator, or other relevant regional staff. The hours and rates required to complete the requirements of each grant program are outlined below:

  • DEP Growing Greener Plus Grant
    • PA IPL Watershed Protection and Water Conservation Education & Outreach
      • 10 hours/week minimum throughout the three-year grant period
        • The first month to two months may require additional hours because we will work as a team to plan the first year of work
        • Program specific time sheets and expense sheets will be required  
      • $17/hour
      • July 6, 2022 - July 5, 2025  
  • DEP Environmental Education Grant
    • Caring for Creation with SE PA IPL
      • Approximately 3.5/week throughout the one-year grant period
        • The first month to two months may require up to 80 hours/month because we will work as a team to plan the first year of work
        • Program specific time sheets and expense sheets will be required
      • $17/hour
      • July 6, 2022 - July 5, 2023
        • With potential for DEP extension to July 5, 2024 or July 5, 2025

PA IPL’s goals in designing and delivering these programs are to focus on particular EJ Communities; to expose attendees directly to nature in hands-on workshops; increase attendees’ understanding of the strategies required to protect our watersheds, and conserve energy, water & waste; and encourage attendees to take specific actions that will reduce the effects of Climate Change, and improve community & individual health as they are called to do by their various faiths or spirituality.

The three primary responsibilities for delivery of each program are Presentation, Coordination & Documentation, more specifically the Coordinator/Fellow will be required to:

  • Assist with planning & implementing the outreach schedules for Years 1-3 in SE PA
  • Conduct listening sessions and deliver related workshops & presentations (virtual & in-person as dictated by public health concerns) that are planned for EJ Communities per grant requirements
  • Assist with assessment of  successes and challenges in Years 1-3 in SE PA, revising educational materials as required by lessons learned in Year 1 for use in Years 2-3
  • Actively participate in the Year 1-3 Staff Meetings to discuss presentations, dates and stakeholder needs across the state for future communication to PA DEP Project Advisor
  • Assist in coordinating the types of presentations & mailers required for varied stakeholders located in SE PA, and in printing the materials for mailing or for in-person distribution to the stakeholders
  • Coordinate with Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light’s Executive Director, staff members, Board, municipalities or conservation districts, and topic experts as required
  • In SE PA, document the number of organizations & individuals engaged, the number & type of BMPs implemented, and the amount of stormwater that is expected to be retained per implemented BMPs; and report this data to the overall project manager who will report it to the PA DEP Project Advisor

This position will require limited travel (maximum of 50 miles one direction) to deliver presentations in SE PA. Access to a vehicle, at least part time, will be beneficial. Access to public transportation may be sufficient for program delivery in the Philadelphia area. This position will require the ability to sit, stand and communicate (using verbal, visual, auditory, laptop and other digital tools), and the lifting and transport of presentation materials such as laptops, projection screens and projectors weighing approximately 25 pounds total. Fluency in Spanish is not required but is desirable. Presentations may be required on evenings and weekends, depending upon the stakeholders and faith-based organizations that we will be presenting to.
