Money Out Of Politics Meeting Notes – 9/25/13, 6PM
Philly Rootstikers/Occupy Philly Money Out of Politics Working Group

Mission:  Philly Rootstrikers educate people in the Philadelphia and surrounding areas about the corrupting influence of money over government. 

#1 Goal:  Each Philly Rootstriker will engage one person each week in discussion about the corrupting influence of money and its affects.  The goal of this discussion will be to provide enough information and/or argument that the person will agree to talk about the discussion with one or more other people.

1.       Introductions – 10 in attendence

2.       Upcoming Actions

a.       Saturday, October 6^th, at 12PM:  Occupy Philly Reunion at City Hall.

                                                               i.      Sheppard to possibly bring the table, but will at least create a flyer with upcoming events on the one side for handing out at OP Reunion.

b.      Tuesday, October 8^th, at 10AM: McCutcheon vs. FEC Press Conference at James A. Byrne Federal Courthouse,   601 Market St., Phila.

                                                               i.      Press Conference goes from 10AM to 11AM.

                                                              ii.      Then Lobby Day is at City Hall from 12PM to 3PM

                                                              v.      Speakers: William Cramer, Sierra Club; Ashley, PennPIRG; Sheppard, Philly Rootstrikers; Cherelle Parker; and possibly John Myerson.

                                                             vi.      Sheppard to email John Poole & Ashley to introduce them to see about getting State Rep Cohen to speak at the press conf.

                                                           vii.      Lobby Day:  What are the Asks?

1.        Getting a ballot question passed by the Law & Gov’t committee.

2.        Get support for the city council vote on the ballot question.

c.       Saturday, October 12^th, March Against Monsanto, at 2PM at 5^th and Market, Independence Mall.

                                                               i.      At Independence Mall from 2PM to 4PM.  Philly Rootstrikers to bring their table and info.

                                                              ii.      March begins at 4PM to head to City Hall, where flyers will be handed out at the end of the march (part of the flyer will promote March Against Corruption, 11/2).

                                                            iii.      Speakers: Diamond; Dalin Leech (Senator, Gov. candidate); John McGorin

                                                             iv.      Dress like bees, there’s going to be a simulation of a colony collapse.

                                                              v.      Spread the word

d.      Saturday, November 2^nd, March Against Corruption, at 12PM at 5^th and Market, Independence Mall.

                                                               i.      Diamond has contact with City for permit for march – Robert T. Allen, Civil Affairs.

                                                              ii.      Diamond to help Donovan complete permit and Donovan to sign.

                                                            iii.      Route to Start at Independence Mall; Walk up 5^th; 1^st Stop at Phila. Federal Reserve; Walk down Arch; Turn on 8^th; 2^nd Stop, Gallery Mall at 8^th & Market; Continue to Walk Down 8^th; Turn Right on Walnut; 3^rd Stop at Corbett’s Office on Broad;  Walk Up Broad to City Hall; Last Stop, Inside City Hall Courtyard.

                                                             iv.      Speakers (at IndMall, Fed, Gallery, Corbett’s Office, City Hall)

1.        TO DO – Need to walk this route to see if there are any other significant symbols of corruption that will be passed by.  Keep it in mind for marcher attention and maybe someone could speak.

2.        Speeches to only be 5 minutes long and energetic.

3.        People to speak:

a.        Donovan, John Poole(?), Diamond, Marc, Michael

b.       Should recruit others to join the march, could include opportunity to speak.

                                                              v.      TO DO – Need to reach out to John Poole about portable sound system, mic, amplification

1.        Sheppard can get a wagon.

                                                             vi.      Michael is reaching out to drummers.  Andrea and he have access to student music groups and they have their own music group as well.

                                                           vii.      Sheppard to reach out to Decarcerate PA about MAM and MAC and drummers.  Sheppard to email Ted about poster and banner making for Oct's last wed Philly  RS meeting.

                                       viii.   Map of march route attached.

Please send a reply if you can help with anything for the upcoming events.  We plan on having a poster/banner making meeting the last Wednesday of Oct.

But also come out and support us and spread the word about the above events.

Its Sheppard from Philly Rootstrikers.  Either I or one of our members talked with you in Rittenhouse Square Park this Summer about the corrupting influence of money over politics, or you've been to one of our meetings before. 

 

You showed interest in knowing more about how money buys results in government, and many of you wanted to know what we can do about it.  Well, we'll be meeting, Wednesday, 09/25/13, at 6pm at the Friends Center located at 1501 Cherry St. in Philadelphia to work on what we are doing.  Join us to make something happen, to inspire others, and to create change.

 

At the Meeting,

• We'll talk about future tabling events

• We'll talk about the upcoming Press Conference at the Phila Federal Courthouse Oct 8th. The March against Monsanto on Oct 12th. AND the March Against Corruption we're working on for Nov 2nd.

• Then we'll talk about a couple of programs we've been working on and work on suggestions presented at the meeting.  Whether you're a regular or a new visitor, ALL suggestions are welcome, and if they receive great response by the meeting attendees, then Philly Rootstrikers will work to make them reality.
