Dear Friends,
The United National Antiwar Committee would like to invite all endorsers of the April 9 and 10 demonstrations against the wars to a conference call discussion with the educator and Counterpunch contributor Vijay Prashad. Dr. Prashad is Professor and Director of International Studies at Trinity College, the author most recently of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World (winner of the Muzaffar Ahmed Book Prize for 2009), and the forthcoming co-edited collection Dispatches from Pakistan. He is soon to publish (in early 2012) The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South.
Dr. Prashad will give a twenty minute presentation, beginning at 8:15 pm, on US war aims and the Arab Spring. This presentation will be followed by a discussion of the current situation in the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa.
Because the assassination of Bin Laden has been the occasion for an upswing in jingoism and Islamophobia, we have also invited attorney Steve Downs to speak briefly on both the ongoing and recent attacks on the Muslim-American community. Downs is the founder of Project SALAM, a group fighting the unjust "preemptive prosecution" or entrapment of Muslim Americans, and a member of the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms, which is mounting a response to the government's dangerous use of secret evidence.
