OCCUPY 4 PRISONERS – MONDAY FEBRUARY 20th – 4pm – 1717 ARCH STREET

In support of Occupy Oakland’s call for a “National Occupy Day in Support of Prisoners” join Decarcerate PA for a rally to protest prison expansion in Pennsylvania.  Right now, PA is spending $685 million dollar to build three new state prisons and expand 9 others. These prison expansions come at a time when budgets for education and human resources are being slashed left and right. These cuts will continue to devastate already struggling communities throughout Philadelphia.

The rally will be at 1717 Arch Street at the Philadelphia offices of Heery International.  Heery is one of the two companies receiving a $315 million contract to build two new state prisons in Montgomery County. When Governor Corbett and Heery International decided to move forward with constructing these prisons they did not bother to consult with incarcerated people and their communities.  On February 20th we are bringing the voices of incarcerated people to Heery, so that they can hear loud and clear that they have no right to profit by building prisons with public money.  Education, jobs and healthcare keep us safe, not more prison beds.  We demand an immediate end to expensive and unnecessary prison construction.

We will be joined by Occupy Philly, the Returning Citizens Voters Movement, and a host of others.  Decarcerate PA will also be holding a rally on the same day in Pittsburgh at the offices of Astorino, the architect for the new prisons. 

Join us to demand:
No new prisons
Enough is enough! More prisons mean more problems.

Decarceration
Prison overcrowding can be solved one way and one way only: reduce the number of people in prison.

Community Reinvestment
Imprisonment guts local resources and destroys families. We need to build communities, not prisons.
