Be careful with your statements like the following:

"lalake... mahihirap na gawain... babae... madadaling gawin na bagay"

It's not politically correct.

mas magaling kung sino mas masipag mag aral at maglaro ng go. walang
kinalaman ang go sa pagiging babae o lalaki, o kung alin man ang mas

Someone asked me if I was angry at JP when I replied above. Not

ng "hehe" sa dulo. Gaya nito -> hehe

actually, may kinalaman ang pagiging babae o lalaki sa go... for one:

same reason kung bakit sa game of life, years ahead ang mga babae...
kasi meron silang good sense of right and wrong...

so sa tingin ko given the same amount of effort, mas may advantage ang

we have a better sense of logic...

pero being a male or female has its own pros and cons...

ang point ko lang is... kaya sa tingin ko mas maraming pro or mas
maraming magaling ng go player na lalaki... nature plays more part
than nurture...

pero para clear at wala kong makaaway... it's just an opinion...

peace ^___^)v

Good points, though you have to consider that theoretically the most
important part of the game, the opening, relies heavily on the right
brain. The development of men and women's brains are indeed different,
and we have different specializations, but until we have more
definitive studies of how we use our brain for Go, I don't see why we
should speculate. One of the marketing of Go is that when playing Go,
both left and right parts of the brain light up in a brain scan. And
then there's also this study I read that even in fields where
theoretically a woman's brain is better equipped, it is still men who
dominate the field. It might be because we don't know enough about our
brains (i.e. our studies are not enough), or that women are still
discriminated today.

But seriously, I think instead of spending time wondering who's got
the advantage in Go, I would rather think about how to spread Go to
more people. If we don't have a lot of girls in the Go community, then
I'd think about how we can attract more of them to this cool game.
It's simply more enjoyable for me to see the community grow, than
think about this issue. Di ba? :)

There is no denying that there are more male pro's than female pro's in the go world.  I can also think of a bunch of other possible reasons why this is the case -- social equality in the go playing countries, traditional roles, upbringing, etc.  The "pampalakasan" argument is a bit of a stretch though hehehe.

As to the left/right hemisphere argument, there are studies that show go players have more activity in the right hemisphere then the left when playing.  So advantages in brain laterality might not have as big an effect after all... (http://www.numenware.com/article/508)

I would like to believe that if someone wants to be good at go, whether they're male or female, they can.  Che is one of our strongest players (although some might argue that she's not really a 'normal' girl. joke lang hehehe) and she is proof that women can be just as strong, at least in our group.

The last thing we want to do is discourage anyone from trying to learn the game because someone "proved" that they are at a disadvantage because of their gender... kaya tingin ko hindi maganda ang ganitong klaseng discussion because we want more people to start playing the game.

Anyway, bati bati sana tayo lahat and i hope more people are start playing this game, lalaki o babae.

Peace din sa lahat :-)
