ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—A miner was killed while four others
sustained varying degrees of injuries and burns in an explosion inside
an illegal small-scale coal mine in Lumbog village in Imelda,
Zamboanga Sibugay, on Thursday evening, the police said Friday.

Senior Superintendent Federico Castro, Zamboanga Sibugay police chief,
identified the dead miner as Even Tulabing Limpa.

The injured were identified as Edwin Nagar, Jesie Tinay, Ramil Ortiola
and Boyet Banda.

Castro said two of the four injured victims were in critical condition
but he did not say who they were.

He said initial investigation disclosed that the miners were about to
start their normal operation around 6:20 p.m. when they noticed that
one of the electric bulbs providing light in the tunnel, which is
owned by Jose Dagpin, was busted.

Castro said one of the miners tried to unscrew the bulb for
replacement but it gave off a spark instead.

“The spark triggered the explosion since the tunnel had high gas
content,” Castro said.

He said Limpa died instantly while the other victims were rushed to
Lanceta Medical Clinic in Pagadian City.

“The site of the incident has been secured and all mining operations
in the area, which are illegal, have been ordered stopped and further
is investigation being conducted,” Castro said.
