Turtle shells seized in Palawan airport

PALAWAN, Philippines – Aviation authorities in Puerto Princesa City
here seized boxes of prohibited Pangolin (scaly anteater) scales and
turtle shells at the local airport at noon Tuesday, Jan. 3

The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) said four boxes
of scales from about 100 Pangolins, locally known as Balintong.

Also recovered were shells of about 40 Green and Hawkville turtles in
four other boxes. Green and Hawkville turtles are considered
endangered species.

Authorities believed that the shells and scales will be use as
accessories and home decorations. On the other hand, the Pangolin
scales are also known in the Chinese culture for their supposed
curative properties.

The boxes were signed by a certain Novelito Rendon and were supposed
to be delivered to Renato Aloyan in Cebu City. Rendon is now facing a
charge of violating Republic Act 9147, or the Wildlife Resources
Conservation and Protection Act.

The freight company who handled the items admitted it did not
thoroughly inspect the boxes, which were earlier declared as
containing “daing” (dried fish).
