Why I Joined This Group

I retired from Meralco (Manila Electric Company), where I worked for 29
years, in October 2005, and I'm now working as a part-time consultant with
Cepalco (Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company.) One of my last
assignments in Meralco was Head of the company's short-lived Demand Side
Management office. Meralco saw that energy efficiency as espoused by DSM
practitioners was not in the Company's best interests.
One of the major benefits of energy efficiency is environmental. Reduction
in energy consumption caused by supply and end-use efficiency will mean
reduction in the emission of toxic and harmful gases and liquid pollutants
that harm our waterways, farmland, and the air we breathe. I am happy that
Cepalco, where I work now, is more enlightened in its way of looking at
things, and is therefore more encouraging in its pursuit of energy
efficiency.
Aside from electric utilities' direct intervention in the way their
customers use electricity, the government can do a lot more by implementing
minimum energyu efficiency standards for appliances and other electricity
and fuel-using devices and vehicles.

There is an urgency to stop global warming. But the best approach is
to apply ,measures locally, then the actions will add up.
Please refer to books written by Bill Mckibben, noted author on the
subject. Try to join the local Greenpeace, Haribon,
campaign against big mining and illegal logging, the 2 worst
enemies of the environment. Vote for
the environmental friendly candidates in May...

You are right there but to review and change current laws in order
to
reduce environmental rsiks are likewise desirable. For example,
Palawan imposed a moratorium on new mining for 20 years (i believe).
To impose moratoriums for logging, coal mining, 8 cylinder cars
(low mileage vehicles in general) would be great too.

Sir,
There are probably reasons why the Jury system was not instituted in the Philippines, an odd fact because our American colonizers use it at home. But of course our legal system mostly comes from the Spanish jurisprudence. I don't know if the Jury system can still be adopted here. Firstly, the Judges and Clerks of Court will see it as an encroachment on their turf. Their power, and thus their money-making ability, will be greatly reduced.

Two Contitutional rights in the American Constitution were not implemented by the colonizing Kanos when they were crafting our Constitution.
1) The Right of Jury by Peers, because those white guys didn't want to be judged by brown pinoys, and;
2) The Right to Bear Arms, because they didn't want any armed brownies running around.
Anyway, what is being introduced here is not a jury in the legal sense but a jury of countries passing judgment on other neighboring countries situated in the same planet.
For example, what would the jury's verdict be on the U.S. and China (the worlds worst polluters) who refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol on pollution reduction and who contributed to make the Copenhagen meet on pollution ineffective?

Thanks for the historical perspective. I think what's important is the
spirit of the law. Knowing why laws were passed bypasses the

I agree about America and China.
But these two countries cannot seem to understand, or maybe do not want to undertake the effort, to become more environment friendly. America keeps hiding behind the fact that "Global Warming" is merely a theory. Well so is GRAVITY and RELATIVITY! They have been seeing the American economy lag behind and do not wish to invest in environmentally friendly technologies.
On the other hand, China could not care less if they all die from pollutants. After all, they have more than a billion lives to sacrifice in order to become the world's number one economy!

Thanks for your opinion which is respected. But think of the
illnesess that a poorly managed environment
can cause. To name a few: toxic chemicals from factories and
farms(pesticides) causing cancer and brain diseases,
air pollution causing asthma and
heart disease due to carbon monoxide; contaminated drinking water
causing cholera,
radioactive material from leaking nuclear power plants causing
radiation illnesses....to name a few.

While this "Is Global Warming Real?" debate has been going on for several years now, I don't think anyone can argue that the excessive carbon emmissions and rain forest destruction is having a negative impact on the quality and sustainability of life on earth.

On my recent vacation last Dec-Jan even I noticed that it was still humid and rainy around Christmas time. I remember that it never used to rain in Christmas/New Year when I was little - it was always crisp and cool. This time it was a little cool but still humid. This year my observation is that the amihan winds did not really start until around mid-January, before amihan would begin around the end of Nov. Another sign of global warming is the receding glaciers in Greenland, Alaska, Swiss Alps, Antartica, and elsewhere. Mon |
