60 talking mynahs rescued from illegal traders

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police – Maritime Group
rescued some 60 talking mynahs in Batangas on Tuesday.
Authorities arrested 5 men at a port in Calatagan town carrying the
birds. One of them was boat owner Florentino Talion.
Talion said he was offered by the illegal merchants P50,000 to bring
the birds to Batangas. The birds were supposed to be brought to Manila
where it will be sold for P2,500 each.
Alejandro Cascara, one of the suspects, said they bought the birds
from members of an indigenous group in Palawan for P600 each.
Arman Hayag, Department of Environment and Natural Resources -
Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) Forest
Ranger, said the 5 violated Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife
Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
Authorities suspect that the group was also involved in the trading of
