The ever increasing advancement in the sciences creates ever more ethical dilemmas for the conscience-minded human being. This event seeks to educate about the long history of science in the Muslim world and then elaborate on the ethical issues we face today and how Islam responds to these difficult questions that modern medical science poses:
- Providing a context for analyzing the relationship between Islam and science.
- Offering an introduction to what Islamic scholars have said about today’s controversial fields of abortion, stem cell research, and euthanasia.
- A discussion on the 'reconciliation' between evolution and religion
Speaker Biographical Information:
Dr. Sadik Kassim holds a Ph.D. in Viral Immunology from LSU Health Sciences Center (2007). He is currently on faculty at the UPenn School of Medicine in the Gene Therapy Program, and as such he is very well read on the numerous ethical questions that modern science poses from an Islamic perspective. Dr. Kassim is well versed in Islamic philosophy and theology and has delivered many thought-provoking lectures and countless powerful speeches at local mosques and community centers, using classical religious sources, pop culture, marketing statistics, scientific theories, and of course the wealth of knowledge and experience he has gained from his academic pursuits. He is an active member of the Philadelphia Muslim community and the greater faith community here in Philadelphia, and often appears as a guest speaker at various interfaith events.
