Program Description

Dr. Margari Hill will discuss the challenges of being racially, sexually, and religiously underrepresented in American society, as well as how race and gender play into the Islamic religion, where her race and gender are also in the minority.  Women are often portrayed in popular culture as oppressed by Islamic society, so hear firsthand if the rumors are true. 

  • Discussion of racial and gender divides within Islamic cultures
  • The direction of Islamic tolerance towards minority gender

Speaker Biographical Information:

Margari Hill-Manley (Aziza) is an educator and writer with an MA in history from Stanford University where she specialized in Islam in Africa and Sufi social networks. Her research focused on formal and informal Islamic education amongst West African migrants in Sudan and Egypt. She has taught classes on African history, Palestine and Israel, Muslim societies and world history, and Race, slavery and Islam. She has given talks at Stanford University, and Santa Clara University on topics such as Black American Muslim communities, the legacy of Malcolm X in the Muslim community,  and concepts of peace in Islam in the wake of 9/11. Her blog, "Margari Aziza,"  has been featured in international magazines and noted as one of the outstanding female blogs for the 2008 Brass Crescent awards.
