CPIJ Photo Night at the P&P: John Tlumacki on covering the Boston Marathon bombing

John Tlumacki of The Boston Globe will present his coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing at the next Photo Night at the Pen and Pencil Club, Tuesday, April 29 at 8 p.m.

John Tlumacki’s work was among thephotography cited when the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting was award to the staff of The Boston Globe. Tlumacki was also an individual Pulitzer finalist for Breaking News Photography this year, was named the National Press Photographers Association’s 2014 Photojournalist of the Year, and one of his marathon bombing photos was honored by The World Press Photo Competition.

Tlumacki has been a staff photographer for the Globe since 1981. He was photographing runners at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon when the first of two bombs exploded 50 feet from him. His photographs of those moments appeared around the world.

Tlumacki is a general assignment photographer and has covered three Winter Olympic Games, and numerous Super Bowls and World Series games, including the Red Sox victory in 2013. He photographed war refugees in Uganda, returning home from a brutal civil war in 1986, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his photos of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Tlumacki graduated from the College of Communications at Boston University, and worked as a photographer for Massachusetts Senator Edward Brooke and for United Press International in Boston before joining the Globe. Tlumacki lives with his wife Debee in Pembroke, Massachusetts.

Tlumacki’s visit is supported Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies at Drexel Univeristy. He will also be in attendance for the opening of the 2014 World Press Photo Exhibition one night later, on April 30th at the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery at Drexel University.
