Join us for Learning, Conversation, Action & Performances! Start off the New Year with the Heschel-King Festival, on January 4-5, 2013 at Mishkan Shalom Synagogue, 4101 Freeland Ave, Philadelphia PA 19128, where we will celebrate and learn from the lives, work, and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Dr. King and Rabbi Heschel worked together in the 1960’s on behalf of racial equality, economic justice and peace. What are the civil rights issues of today? How can we work together across race, religion, class, and ethnicity to create a more just society? Co-sponsored by more than 35 faith and community groups, the Heschel-King Festival will explore these questions for a new generation. We hope you will join us!

We have chosen to offer the Festival FREE OF CHARGE to welcome as broad a community as possible. Nevertheless, the costs of organizing the event are considerable. We invite participants and supporters to join us in an economic expression of “The Beloved Community” (a phrase frequently used by Dr. King), by sharing what you can to make this festival possible. If you are able, share a bit extra to support those who are not able to contribute much.

The Heschel-King Festival will be a robust and inspiring weekend. Keynote speakers include two close colleagues of Dr. King - Dr. Vincent Harding, civil rights historian and scholar and Ms. Dorothy Cotton, former Education Director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun magazine, who studied with Rabbi Heschel. The program includes performances by a multi-faith choir, conversations among the speakers and local leaders, a showcase of 15 community action groups, a performance by a multi-faith group of teens developed by Philly’s own Bible Raps, excerpts from a film about Heschel by Steve Brand …and more!
Spread the Word to your Communities and Friends Please reach out to your communities and friends to encourage registration … and support for the Festival! We need your help in getting the word out about this amazing Festival. To help, we attached a two-sided flyer and text for your community’s newsletter. Please feel free to use and adapt them.
We look forward to seeing you at the Heschel-King Festival!
