Philadelphia Jews for a Just Peace invites
you to participate in our work of spiritual reclamation.
Please join us for our annual Tashlich
Tzedek.
Date: Thursday,
September 29, the first day of Rosh Hashanah
Time:
3:00 PM
Location: Martin
Luther King Drive (West River Dr.) along the Schukyll River Park near
the
disabled rowing club. South of Montgomery, right near Black Road. We
will post
signs for parking.
Each Rosh Hashanah, PJJP members and our
allies gather for Tashlich Tzedek, a ritual that
is both spiritual and
political. Tashlich is a traditional
Jewish ceremony at the Jewish New Year when we cast off the sins of the
previous year by casting symbolic stones into a body of moving water.
Borrowing from this tradition, we
gather with a shared communal intention: to
cast off the sins of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, to disavow the
injustices being committed in our names, and to pledge to work for
justice and
peace in Palestine/Israel in the year to come.
This
unique tashlich (casting away) ritual uses poetry, songs, and readings
from
Jewish tradition to help us focus on our responsibilities as Jews and as
US
citizens. We'll name the sins/realities of this Occupation and ritually
cast
them away, opening space in our own lives to continue to work
toward peace with justice in Palestine and Israel.
For a year made
sweet by our acts of
tikkun olam,
