Hi Phil 202 folk:

1. Attached, the missing page of my "Paternalism Utility & Fairness." I hope it
clears up all doubts and blocks any devastating objections you were formulating.
Sorry for the glitch.

2. Next Thursday, in connection with Mill's CONSIDERATIONS ON REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT,
I recommend two critical responses to Mill on plural votes (the chapter 8 argument).

One is David Estlund, "Why Not Epistocracy?". A pdf of this article will be added to the course
we b page. You can also download the essay by going to the Brown University Philosophy Department
web page, click on faculty, click on David Estlund. At his web page he has a bibliography with links to his
essays including this one. I believe the substance of the chapter is also reprrinted in his recent book
DEMOCRATIC AUTHORITY.

The second reading is an excerpt from a book POLITICAL EQUALITY by Charles Beitz. In one
chapter of that book he criticizes instrumental approaches to the justification of democratic rights,
and engages specifically with Mill's arguments. I'll try to locate this item and make it available.

Have a good holiday break, see you Thursday,
Dick Arneson
