to Mill's Moral and Political Philosophy
Some students have already turned in drafts. Others have not yet.
Some students who have turned in drafts have turned in what are really
outlines of a long paper rather than a draft of a long paper. This is
problematic. If the final version of the paper is supposed to be at
least fifteen pages, then a draft should be 10 pages at the very
least. A short outline, even if otherwise well done, will leave many
important points undeveloped. But then Dick and I cannot offer
specific and constructive comments and suggestions. The unfortunate
consequence of this is that these “drafts” won’t elicit ideal feedback
and “revisions” are likely to be much more like a first draft than
they should be. This really defeats much of the point of assigning a
long paper in two drafts. It's frustrating to us, and it's going to
cause problems for students that submit very incomplete drafts. I
would urge students who have not yet submitted drafts to make sure
that they submit complete drafts.
