Should the essay be written in standard 12 font and double spaced?

Yes. Although, contrary to MLA format, I usually single space the
heading since the professors I've had here at UCSD prefer it that
way. Double spacing the heading makes it look like you're just trying
to waste space.

Double spaced with 12 pt font is good. --DB
