Bill how's it going with insanity.  i'm starting to get a little more serious about it and am still aiming early jan to get going.

Still going. I bet it would be going better if i were doing the diet, or eating close to "right".  I have been skipping the recovery day on Thursdays and using that day to catch up because i am usually one day behind at that point.

I took the "fit test" on day 1 and 15 and there is definitely improvement. I am not looking forward to month 2, and may just do month 1 over again if it kicks my ass to much.

yeah that was my thinking behind waiting until jan was the diet.  there's no question diet is half the battle, if not more.  with xmas, new years, random holiday parties it's nearly impossible not to eat like a slob and drink yourself silly.

i never did p90x. but it really depends on your goals.

I feel p90x is better for getting all around jacked and insanity is definitely better for improving cardio, shedding weight, and getting a 6 pack.

That said, insanity.

they are all doable. so moderate. it just depends on how many breaks you take and if you try to keep up 100% on all the exercises.

for example, there is one that is a squat thrust with 8 pushups. by the time i get into the second time through it i am just getting into a pushup position by the time he is at the 4th pushup. so what do you do, go for the 8 pushups and fall behind, or just cut out the 4 and try to keep up?

How's this going Bill? Anyone else getting cut in the winter months? I finally got back into running after taking a month off. Yesterday, I ran outside in 10 degree weather and I'm glad I turned around when I did because even with gloves on, my fingers were numb to the point I could barely open the door with my key when I got home. It took about 10 minutes of trying to warm them up to regain color and feeling so..... fuuuuuuuck that! I gotta find some hardcore gloves because I don't know how long I can deal with treadmill + basketball-only Sportscenter as the NFL season wraps up.

There are still people running outside in shorts in CT. It was like 8 degrees out yesterday. I don't understand how they still have legs.

I've been hitting the gym probably 3-4 times a week since finishing P90X, alternating between weights and treadmill. Not sure if I have hit enough weights to get cool yet (guessing no).

Mizuno is a big baseball brand, they've expanded to other sports more lately.

I would just get ready for your back to hurt Oldhouse. I'm gonna spare you the details because I want to encourage you and running is a hell of a lot of fun once you get over the initial "running sucks ass."  Unfortunately managing pain is most likely something you're gonna have to deal with based purely on personal experience and people I know (like Jack I am also not a doctor and that is based on a sample size of about ~20 people).

P.S. don't waste your money on a chiropractor. If you actually want to get help, see if you insurance will cover a visit to a physical therapist. They can still do adjustments, but they actually help you correct problems and help figure out the cause of your problems.

More sweetrustips:

- these are expensive, but badass http://www.amazon.com/The-Stick-Original-Body/dp/B000P7RSL2 (I resisted buying one for awhile, but now I'm glad I did)

- softballs are money for massing the bottom of your foot if you have to deal with shit like planar fasciitis

- beer stores (like supply stores for homebrew) usually have free ice packs in a bin that they use to ship all the yeast and they're smaller than normal. I keep a ton of these in my freezer and I like the size because they are easier to store and you can target small areas pretty easily.

Do you do a full leg rub-down with the stick after running, or wait for the pain then apply as necessary? I like the idea of rubbin it up with one of those sticks either way.

Yea I've been to both a bunch. Gave up on the chiropractor because it seemed like they were just providing me temporary relief and not helping me change anything. One of our good friends is a badass PT and he's helped me out with a few things, but nothing back related yet. I slouch like a motherfucker so I think my back problems are heavily attributed to sitting down all day for work, but running with terrible posture certainly doesn't help. I need to get on one of those medieval racks and straighten out my back I think.

In on some sweet cross-sport algorithm. Shane gets 10 miles for every GP, 2 miles per goal, 1 miles per assist and 1/4 mile for every penalty minute. 3x multiplier if you get in a fight with the other team's goalie.

Brad Ash

It's usually only about 2/10 - 1/2 mile off (on the high side) over the course of a few miles when running at a controlled pace after calibrating on a treadmill. Doing any intervals or running faster than usual throws it out of whack and I normally run outside with a GPS so that has certainly made me think less of my Nike+ than I used to.

You need an ipod or iphone, then you buy this:

One sensor goes in your shoe (helpful if you have Nike shoes with the built in place for it) and receiver plugs into your phone/ipod.

They also make a wrist kit and watches.

The one I use is on my ipod nano, but I think they make them for all sorts of devices now. Don't get me wrong, when I first got it, I thought it was the bees knees and for the way it's measuring distance without any GPS, it's pretty impressive how close it can get. I've just become less impressed over time as I've used more accurate equipment and started doing different interval training.

I bought a used Garmin Forerunner 305 on Craigslist for like 1/3 of the price and love it. Convinced QQ to get one as well and he is also in love (but that's his MO). I haven't gotten into any of the heartrate training or more advanced shit it can do, but for pure pacing and running outside it rocks. Even balls on accurate doing trail races in the woods.

You know what they say, once you go black, you're gonna need a wheelchari.

I think the Nike+ would be a lot better if it could give you pacing information and split times. I've been waiting for them to update that with software.

Does the FitBit require you to carry your phone with you or does it store data you can dump later? I'm not a fan of running with my phone either in a pocket or on an armbad.

it stores it all.  And it will auto dump your data when you walk by your hotspot / it's charging station.
