Greetings from Parichay

It is Parichay's two year anniversary and we are excited to invite you for marking the milestone together with us at our virtual Ask Us Anything on the NRC, to be held on December 1st at 6 PM (IST).

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam is a register containing names of Indian citizens in the state of Assam. An NRC was first prepared only for the state of Assam after independent India’s first Census in 1951. In 2013, pursuant to a public interest litigation, the Supreme Court directed that the updation of the NRC in Assam be carried out across the state. From 2015 - 2019, every resident in Assam had to file forms, submit numerous documents and attend several rounds of verification to prove their citizenship. The final NRC list published on August 31, 2019 ended up excluding 19,06,657 residents of Assam. But what does exclusion from the Register actually mean and what do those finding themselves excluded have to do?

This Ask UAnything session is an attempt to provide a gateway for re-starting meaningful academic discussion on the NRC exercise and its ground level ramifications in the state of Assam. From legal aspects of detention and deportation to the effect of CAA, the session will cover many important aspects of the NRC. We solicit your inquisitive questions on the subject, for curiosity did not kill the cat. You can register for the event here.

Darshana Mitra and Rupali Samuel would be fielding your questions while Shardul Gopujkar will moderate the event. The event will also stream live on our YouTube channel.

Date & Time - 1st December 2021 at 6 PM (IST)
