For some reason we get a seriously sick message about the target
"default|BCP" does not exist. Does anyone have any experience with
Phantom and Windows XP?

That sounds like a MSBuild issue, not a phantom issue. Can you post further details?

You were right, an Environment variable with the name PLATFORM was set
to BPC and conflicted with some MSBUILD platform setting. We removed
this and it worked fine.
